Artifacts made of stone, bone and other hard materials are somewhat easy to identify. But scientists have to get creative when it comes to discovering the clothes early humans wore. Live Science explores the question of when people started wearing clothes: https://flip.it/SSdstG

It’s best to avoid taking things away from Uluru (Australia), Pompeii (Italy), Iona (Scotland), Mauna Kea (Hawaii), or any other revered site.

Priceless artifacts found near untouched site in central .

Beothuk Lake was the last refuge for Newfoundland's group. They struggled with European diseases, violent encounters, and losing crucial migration routes to colonization. Shawnadithit, widely recognized as the last Beothuk, died in 1829.

Among the items found were a pair of deer spears — metal rods taken from European settlements and sharpened at the tip to kill caribou; they're perhaps the best preserved

11.7" (29.72 cm) tall, the bottle was made using either a semi-automatic (post-1889) or automatic (post-1906) bottle machine. It was made in a 5-piece mold, with the closure mold offset from the body mold. The kick-up base (a) appears to have a valve mark (b).

This bottle is special in 2 ways.

  1. My mother found it in a hardwood bottom-land while squirrel hunting about 50 years ago.

  2. In all my years of archaeology & artifact analysis, I have never run across this color (blue-green) glass unless it was art glass, stained glass or telephone insulator.

CBI Image of the Day.

A portion of the Analytical Engine of the incomplete mechanical computer at time of inventor Charles Babbage's passing in October 1871.

Held at Science Museum of London (its photo--CC). Contained a store for numbers (or memory) and a mill (which corresponds to what we think of as the CPU). It was 15 ft tall & weighed what a small locomotive does.
