"More than 180 New Zealand public agencies have transferred masses of data to Microsoft cloud computing servers in Australia for storage and processing since 2019. Sensitive courts data could be headed that way."
"The NDMS [National Disease Management System] was being hosted within a 'private isolated section' of Amazon's 'cloud' of data warehouse servers in Sydney."
At our recent AC meeting in Hiroshima, Japan 🇯🇵 @p20n, spoke on Data sovereignty.
Data sovereignty is the ongoing effort of individuals and organizations to oversee the data they produce, store, disseminate, and exchange.
Pierre-Antoine, W3C Data Strategist, evaluated several organizations and projects concerning data sovereignty and autonomy, exploring potential future collaboration opportunities. #DataSovereignty
The successful #Mastodon and #PeerTube instances for #EU institutions run by @EDPS will be shut down on May 18th 😥
It seems that the #EuropeanCommission and #EVP have no interest in promoting independent, #bigtech-free and low-surveillance European platforms and thus a free and democratic discourse…
@joeo10@larkim There will be plenty of time to get angry when it comes to it, but what's the point of having @EU_Commission here if we don't give them the benefit of the doubt?
I also want the EU to continue to have its own instance, but if @EDPS won't continue to run social.network.europa.eu, I think it's best to focus our attention on convincing the accounts to stay in the fediverse and come back to an EU instance at a later date (probably run by another org, maybe the Commission itself).
Eh, what? Just as @EU_Commission is finally finding their voice here, the server is shut down? This makes zero sense, @EDPS. On the contrary, the Commissioners, MEPs, and other key people should be guided off the cesspool site they still linger around.
German state of Schleswig-Holstein ditches Windows, Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions.
EU’s use of Microsoft 365 found to breach data protection rules

💡 The article presents an in-depth analysis of the emancipatory potential of #Web3#technologies in mitigating #democratic erosion caused by #data monopolies. It's time for a shift towards equitable data ecosystems. #Web3#DataDemocracy#AI

This allows you to follow #creators directly from multiple platforms through "sources" such as #youtube#soundcloud#peertube etc and also support them through their preferred funding type. Removing the middleman and giving them back control on their "brand/identity" without being locked in.
Futo was "founded in 2021 by 18-year Silicon Valley veteran, programmer/founder of Yahoo! Games, and WhatsApp seed investor Eron Wolf" and I suspect that this serial enterpreneur had a good look for getting a proper revenue stream going.
I get the impression that the business model behind this app simply does not involve it to be FOSS. Maybe I'm wrong. Otherwise, opportunity missed. We can sure need more examples of sustainable FOSS.
How do these #DisruptiveTechnologies affect #ediasporas?
Do they hinder or exacerbate the impacts of networks predominantly driven by #data-centric activities?
"This sounds very much like an acknowledgment that stashing one's data in the Cloud for Sovereignty will not exempt it from prying eyes, although Microsoft insisted: 'The access is typically required in response to customer support requests. In such situations, Microsoft engineers can be granted temporary access with valid business justification'."
"In 2022, Frank Karlitschek, CEO of NextCloud, criticized Microsoft for misusing the term "sovereignty."
... While Microsoft will point to the multiple regions available to customers, it is still Azure running behind the scenes on the company's own servers, and governments heading its way run the risk of being locked into the company's ecosystem."
What this does point to is that data sovereignty advocacy is making any impact. Government IT decision-makers now feel obliged to at least handwave at it, whether or not they fully understand it. While corporate DataFarmers feel obliged to sell something vaguely resembling it.
