For supporters of a #hydrogen#transport economy, its all looking a bit like the Betamax/VHS choice in the 1980s (for this of you old enough to recall the river video system);
Several Republican representatives have proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act to try to stop the Pentagon’s electrification. The proposals sound so mind-bogglingly dumb that they look like they were written by 19th-century Luddites or the fossil fuel industry itself....
"the cars can be taken down to the Japanese company's hydrogen refuelling station in Melbourne's west, just a 20-minute drive from the company's headquarters"
"Filling up takes less than five minutes"
So we're at 45min to fill up which is longer than a modern EV's 10-80% charge time?
"Hydrogen refuelling stations opened recently include a $2.5 million facility"
Hydrogen bus project cancelled in France once it was realized that they could accomplish the same for 1/6th the cost using Electric buses.
I mean... it's just common sense. We already have an electrical grid, not a hydrogen distribution network.
Plus, Converting energy to electricity to battery potential to motion is WAAAY more efficient than converting energy to hydrogen and then converting it back.
"Electric vehicles (#EVs) significantly cut lifecycle greenhouse gas #emissions in almost all circumstances and are the key technology for decarbonising road transport."
E.g.: Lifecycle EV emissions break even with those of gas cars at only 16,000 miles or less. Beyond that the climate wins all the way.
But there is a whole myth making machine that is trying to make. you think otherwise. Get the fact check here:
Typically, it takes around 10 hours to charge an electric vehicle. Even with fast-charging techniques, you're still looking at a minimum of 30 minutes – and that's if there's an open spot at a charging station.
Here's an interesting piece by Rowan Atkinson on the Q. of whether you should buy a new #electriccar or continue to use your old petrol car a while longer:
its clear that an old car's #environmental costs are largely already accounted for so its only the marginal environmental costs of usage that we should factor into our considerations;
so rather than buy #electricvehicles, we might be better refusing the three year cycle of replacement, & then trying to drive less
Vry important article on how the market-supremacist way we approach #ClimateChange solutions hurts us all.
"Although the EV rush has reduced tailpipe emissions, it has also entrenched car dependence, which inflicts other kinds of damage."
Think about how #Climate solutions face a crowding-out effect: solutions favored by corporations, like #ElectricVehicles can be a substitute for more transformative change like rethinking travel & transit infrastructure.
The steel industry knows it's up against the wall. The idea that "Green Steel" is part of the #zero-emissions solution is a pipe dream. #Mining and #refining require #energy, and lots of it. In this paper we are being sold #Hydrogen as the answer, so lets see.
Crazy, been hearing all today bout how Hertz have 'dumped' Tesla because reasons and they are selling 20,000 #evs
Except they are currently selling 27,721 vehicles.
-661 are Teslas (2%)
-5394 are Chevrolets
-5301 are Fords
-2890 are Nissans
-2231 are Toyotas
-Sales also include Mercedes, Porsche and many others
The teslas are high mileage vehicles they have rented to uber drivers, this is pretty standard behavior for rental companies..
Alberta's energy minister said on #Twitter / #X that upgrading a garage to 200 amp service for electric vehicle charging costs $50,000 or more for most homes.
I just completed a 1200 mile East Coast USA road trip in a rented Kia Niro EV. The car was fine, but the CCS charging infrastructure was abysmal. Broken chargers, broken apps, and frustrated drivers. I shall post this as a thread. #EV#electricvehicles
