@maegul@liaizon yep that's how I'm reading it, but also who hosts a completely open instance from their home? Oh nevermind I just remembered that #hachyderm started in nova's basement :blobfoxlaughsweat:
I know, I know, I'm the devil incarnate but I actually think #threads could be a good thing for the #fediverse.
I'm not saying we should all switch to it, I prefer the feel of #hachyderm and the indie fediverse in general, but for onboarding new folks I think it has potential.
My biggest concern is how we prevent the sort of #hate against others that seems so common on some mainstream social networks.
One thing we do that's a little different is that we always clone into a fresh directory and symlink in our config instead of pulling the tag on top of the existing content. This is mostly to provide for a quick rollback, but maybe helped us avoid possible cache/precompile issues?
Hey #Hachyderm, for those of you who are using Lemmy, have any of you found the Hachyderm equivalent server? Something that achieves a nice balance between large enough to be active but also with a well-run moderation operation? I have been using lemmy.world so far, and no offense to them, it's gotten too big and juvenile for my taste.
Beehaw.org seems to be my best bet so far, but I'm curious what your experience has been.
this finished btw - full-text search is re-enabled on #hachyderm (unofficially). we'll do a "real" announcement after watching it for a few days for stability/reliability.
Can we add #emoji to our #Mastodon instance? I'd like a raised black fist emoji, like Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Summer Olympics @hachyderm#hachyderm
My feelings right now about #meta, the #fediverse, and my own cozy corner here on #Hachyderm is that I'd like my instance not to sell my data to meta, not to federate with meta, and not to have clandestine meetings with meta.
I'm not being hardline or a zealot about it, but I think extending any amount of grace to an organization that has shown nothing but contempt for every other actor they engage with, and has never demonstrated any trust-worthy qualities, is just damn foolish. That's my vote
The #mastodon approach to handling #spam is so backwards.
"Too many messages? Bots doing bad stuff via the federated timeline? The solution is to hide our users and make the network less useful for them!"
Limiting good accounts' reach because of spam on huge instances instantly makes the whole thing less useful to me. Nobody on those big instances sees my posts unless they already follow me.
Over the last few weeks #hachyderm has become much less useful to me due to mod drama and then overreaction to spam making my instance more and more isolated. Instance federation as it stands is not working for a global communication medium.
We're going to end up where we are with #email: one big provider who can actually effectively manage its ecosystem ignores or freezes out smaller ecosystems because of spam and other computer-enabled bad behavior.
Please boost for reach. As blind diabetics, my dad and I have been using the Freestyle Libre continuous blood glucose monitoring system for a few years with our iPhones. Have any blind people had any experience with the Freestyle Libre 3, which is smaller and doesn't require scanning, used with an iPhone? Is the app still VoiceOver friendly?
So it looks like home.social is going to shut down this year (see announcement below).
That’s a 36k user instance. Along with mastodon.lol recently, are mid-sized instances feeling the strain? Are they naturally unsustainable, at least without the right infrastructure.
I’m betting single admin mid-sized instances are unsustainable.
#Hachyderm could easily have struggled to survive recently if it weren’t for its co-op org.
Wow! It has been so amazing being welcomed to #fediverse and #hachyderm today! Thank you everyone for a wonderful first day here. I love it so much more than the other social media. I think I will stay.
