So. I'm thinking of leaving #hachyderm for an instance that blocks #threads. I've read the reasons, and it's not enough to play in the same waters as the evilcorp that is meta.
Suggestions? Tech centric, inclusive, progressive is what I'm looking for.
Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?
I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.
My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷♂️
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬
we plan on announcing the "nivenly fedi security fund experiment" later this weekend. preview: pay finders/contributors who find/close high/critical bugs in fedi software. we did a mini proof of concept and sponsored @thisismissem to ship a fix for a critical 9.9 score vulnerability in pixelfed, and now we're ready to expand a bit. more soon!
I’m Michelle (she/they). Most of what you need to know is in my bio. Gonna expand on it a little here.
I used to work for one of the big tech companies. Nowadays, I look upon Silicon Valley and tech culture in general with considerable skepticism. That said, I love gadgets, and I dabble in #RetroComputing and #RetroGaming. Remember when computers were fun? Me too.
I’ve seen more people talk about the recent Mastodon spam wave than I’ve seen actual spam. And I’ve seen people complain about performance issues on Mastodon without ever having experienced any myself.
Whatever the #hachyderm team is doing, they are doing it really well.
If you’re on this instance and have some money to spare, don’t forget to sponsor the team making it all work so smoothly!
seems like #hachyderm is experiencing some kind of split brain, probably between streaming & polling APIs. ivory is getting some of my notifications while the web app is getting an entirely different set
The TL;DR is that Hachyderm federates by default until there is a reason not to. The moderators are committed to researching how Threads is behaving in the Fediverse and we should hear an update in a couple weeks, with an in-depth explanation of whatever action the mods take by the end of January (if I'm reading right).
@davealvarado Since this decision in July, Threads has demonstrated its unwillingness to moderate hate speech and harassment.
It is a known fact that A LOT of transphobes and white supremacists thrive on that instance, how many users will need to be brigaded and harassed before you de-federate? I signed up on #hachyderm because of the "Safe Space For Technical Professionals" headline, but I cannot feel safe on an instance that waits for harm to happen when it's obvious that it will.
There was talk a while ago of hachyderm starting a sibling lemmy instance. I think it was decided to be too much or not worth it. Makes perfect sense.
The more I interact with what became the de facto tech lemmy instance the more I wish hachyderm had made a lemmy instance and tried to establish good/nice tech culture.
Every interaction I have with programming.dev feels like a frustrating conversation with a more juvenile version of hackernews.
I’m a software engineer at GitHub working on the most impressive metered usage billing system around. My favorite dev languages are #ruby and #javascript, but I venture into #go and #php too.
I’m a dad of 2 and disability advocate currently running for election to my local school board.
Thanks to @nova and the #hachyderm crew for running this server. The open source web and ruby community are what drew me into development, so I love how this is run.
The week after Thanksgiving will always be deeply bittersweet to me now.
This month, and next week in particular, mark the anniversary of the Hachyderm incident. @nova, @Taniwha, @dma, @malte, @quintessence, and I worked around the clock for over a week to migrate Hachyderm from Nóva's basement into Europe
I am forever indebted to that incident for launching my public speaking career, and to this team for becoming my beloved friends
And to Nóva, for chasing the dopamine, for tying us together
I'm noticing folks doing an #introduction so here's one for me!
I'm Jami and I'm a Software Developer specializing in the #frontend currently working on the #designsystem for va.gov. Work that's near and dear to my heart as a #veteran myself.
I enjoy #woodworking 🔨 (I just finished building a 300+ lb workbench!) and I enjoy #sports, especially watching my beloved #chicagobears 🏈
I'm in Chicago with my partner, our dog, and two cats.

Wow it’s been just over a year since I joined #Mastodon#Hachyderm time flies! Definitely one of the best social media decisions I’ve never made. The decision to roll out of the bird site has done wonders for my mental health.
Not a bad day. I managed to get the new Epyc server built and sorted out how to run containers without root, then got mobilizon (https://meetups.infosec.exchange) up and running in a container on the new server. I am 98% complete with moving video.infosec.exchange there - peertube’s config files are dramatically different between a bare metal install (what the current site uses) and a containerized version - it’s been tedious to sort everything out, but I think I’m close.
Next will be moving pixel, elk, matrix, infosec.pub, and infosec.place to it. Matrix will be next as it’s running low on disk space.
Today, it's been 1 year since I joined #hachyderm: a year full of encounters. I discovered new sources to keep myself informed and above all I left Twitter and its hostile environment.
Thanks to @nova for launching Hachyderm.
RIP :nova:
