« Why Your Wi-Fi Router Doubles as an Apple AirTag » by @briankrebs
« Apple did not respond to requests for comment. But in late March 2024, #Apple quietly tweaked its #privacy policy, allowing people to opt out of having the #location of their wireless access points collected and shared by Apple — by appending “_nomap” to the end of the Wi-Fi access point’s name (SSID). Adding “_nomap” to your Wi-Fi network name also blocks Google from indexing its location. »
My latest pet #project: Replace the "free" #location sharing services with simple solution where one has full control of (a) data collection (b) data storage (c) data sharing/visualisation.
If you want to give this #GoogleLatitude like alternative a go, I'd be happy for any and all comments:
Need to keep your location private? Advanced #Privacy has you covered. With #AdvancedPrivacy, you can fake your location and protect your privacy wherever you go. 🗺
Does your phone offer location privacy features like Murena phone does?
@murena@e_mydata@gael yeah, but it would become really usefull if you could select the apps that are allowed to have your real location, and give the others a random or null location
Girls running warping machines in Loray mill, Gastonia, N.C. Many boys and girls much younger. Boss carefully avoided them, and when I tried to get a photo which would include a mite of a boy working at a machine, he was quickly swept out of range. "He isn't working here, just came in to help a little." Location: Gastonia, North Carolina.
If you're considering attending a Puzzled Pint this month (/cc @ramsey@sean) the location puzzle is up, you'll need to solve it to find out where to go. (well, not actually, you can skip it, but it's good practice!). Google is a valid tool to use.
This wired article is a long read but I promise you its worth it.
<tl/dr>
Don't allow your #smartphone to access your #location. Don't ever share location data with any app.
Seriously.
"If you ever granted an app permission to know where you are 24/7, there is a good chance a detailed log of your precise movement patterns has been vacuumed up and saved in some data bank somewhere that tens of thousands of total strangers have access to. That includes intelligence agencies. It includes foreign governments. It includes private investigators. It even includes nosy journalists."
