Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican American culture, not independence. My grandfather was from Puebla, so in his case it was a big deal as well. In any case I don't mind if people enjoy a tequila shot or two.

The Dahlia, the national flower of Mexico on Cinco de mayo. Dahlia pinnata, native to Mexico and central America. It is edible and is a staple of Oaxacan cuisine. Prior to the discovery of insulin it was used to make diabetic sugar and is still used in tests of kidney functions.

No, today is Not 's Independence Day.

"For most , the holiday ("Cinco de Mayo") isn't a major deal. It's simply a national holiday that is observed by some. The $2 margaritas, two-for-one tacos, and wear-your-sombrero-to-work traditions will most likely only happen here (in the U.S.) on not south of the border."
