That's bad for Americans -- and it's risky for the Big Three.

Last weekend, Parisians voted yes

  1. All should be able to park their in Paris with no negative consequences.

  2. If you live outside of , and want to park your SUV on the streets in Paris, you will have to pay 3 times as much as a resident.

  3. The price increase will occur for vehicles that are 1601 kg or more, but not less than 1600 kg.

I am generally sympathetic to the sentiment behind this law, but the law itself is really dumb.

In Slate, I wrote about yet another problem due to car bloat:

Researchers found that SUVs and pickups have grown so huge that they can destroy highway guardrails.

Taxpayers are on the hook for fixes that could cost billions.

Add it to the list of societal challenges worsened by oversized cars (pedestrian deaths, climate change, unaffordable mobility, highway erosion...).

Adfree Cities, an advocacy group in the UK successfully got an ad for the Toyota Hilux SUV that shows drivers ripping through sensitive natural areas and cities taken off the airwaves and streets.

We talked with two members of the organization about how they’re tackling the auto industry’s most egregious marketing campaigns.

: "Green activists in Paris are making a final push to win a landmark vote tripling parking charges for SUVs in a move aimed at tackling air pollution that is being closely watched by other cities such as London.

Paris residents will be asked to vote on Sunday for or against a special parking tariff for heavy, large and polluting SUVs parked by non-residents, as the French capital aims to target rich, out-of-town drivers entering the city in order to tackle climate breakdown and air pollution.

In final campaigning before Sunday’s vote, the socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, canvassed parents outside a primary school in the 10th arrondissement near the Gare du Nord, where pollution from large boulevards, traffic on small backstreets and a lack of green space had led many residents to call for fewer cars."

I fear for my children’s safety and lungs with these tanks lumbering around my city.

But because the city’s transport policy is determined by a single county councillor without public debate, it’s highly unlikely any time soon.

The cost to park in Paris's central districts for drivers that do not have a special licence from local authorities is set to soar to €18 (£15) per hour for the first 2 hours, compared to €6 (£5) per hour for smaller cars.

After that, will become increasingly punitive.

A 6 hour stay with an will cost €225 (£192), compared to €75 (£64) for smaller vehicles.

New cars in the EU and UK have grown 1cm wider every two years, spurred on by the sale of SUVs.

It’s symbolic for the inherent flaw of capitalism, where everything must grow all the time for the system to work, at the expense of natural resources and the environment. Time for degrowth.

Killer roads

"Five people died and four were injured in three car crashes across NSW since 2pm Monday. Federal data released this week shows the national road death toll increased 7 per cent from 2022 to last year, while the NSW toll jumped 25 per cent."

They call for more data on the "death Toll", money and more (killer) roads, but never for a radical infrastructure redesign. No data on "roadkill" of native animals either.
