Fascist Russia cut undersea communications cables.
Nothing to see here. Just perfectly normal russian bottom trawling back and forth repeatedly just on top of the main fiber optic internet cable between Svalbard and the Norwegian mainland.
The sabotage of the #Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the #Baltic Sea shed new light on two incidents in the Norwegian Arctic involving the cutting of communication cables.
I first met Geir Moholdt in Svalbard in 2005 when we were both PhD students at #UNIS. Now we're both at this high level meeting for the #WMO#PHORS panel, still talking about glaciers. #SatPic behind his title slide shows #Svalbard#glaciers in summer, not much snow left, a terrible sign for a glacier, confirmed by red blobs that show thinning rates since the 1930s. Since 2011 the glaciers of Svalbard on average have lost half a metre per year! #StillItMelts
I was looking at some paleo sea level data from the small island of Storöya in Svalbard, and it looks like Google Earth has the wrong location for the map outlines for the island, so it did not have a satellite photo of it! This is a GSHHG problem, likely (a similar problem is in northern Greenland). #GIS#GoogleEarth#Svalbard
‘It is April and, as polar bear cubs frolic, the ice fractures, its fragility laid bare. A stark reminder of the urgent need to preserve this majestic realm, urging us to safeguard our precious Arctic for generations to come. The polar regions are vital for the entire planet. Without the icy regions, the stability of our world is collapsing. Svalbard, Norway.’

Barentsburg: the Norwegian town feeling the chill of the Ukraine war.
Relations sour between the Svalbard town’s Russian and Ukrainian communities while a local tourism company is accused of being an ‘arm of the Russian state’.
I've recently participated to a tourist expedition around Svalbard with Secret Atlas Travel on the R/V Kinfish, to observe the local wildlife and gain a better understanding of how the Arctic regions are affected by climate changes.
Behold! New #Svalbard is coming! Pretty good band, the first glimpse to the new record is great!
Just waiting for it to be available on a EU-based reseller, I'm fed up with the crazy import taxes I have to pay for British records since Brexit
I have uploaded to #flickr some high resolution #photographs I have taken in #Svalbard some days ago. As always, they are free, licensed as CC BY-SA 2.0.
