A quick overview of current #AI regulations proposals in the legislative process
(1/n)
Today, I read about someone still using #Google that in his search, he had the first 3 pages of hits with "junk" results which he attributed to #AI generated pages.
#Dems introduced a Bill Requiring Political Ads to Disclose AI Use at the beginning of May, 2023. Even though sensible, I don't see it getting passed due to the distribution of power in Congress, unless there...
... classified "#AI
systems to influence voters in political #campaigns and in recommender systems used by social media platforms (with more than 45 million users under the Digital Services Act, #DSI) to the high-risk list."
Apart from high-risk #AI, there are rules suggested for General-purpose AI.
"Generative foundation models, like #GPT, would have to comply with additional #transparency requirements,..."
RT @GreensEFA: 6 months after #Qatargate: we had hoped the plan presented to address issues of ethics, corruption & sanctions in the EU Parliament would be farther along by now.
Texas Public Records Transparency Bill That Got Lost Amid GOP Infighting Finally Headed to Governor’s Desk
#Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he always intended to sign the measure but pulled it aside in response to the House playing “games” at the end of the legislative session.
#AFPLwouf23 panelist Karen Hutchinson on the importance of #transparency in decision-making around what happens in extreme situations (drought, or flood). Very relevant – both for policy making, but also for algorithmic design of relevance to these systems.
Texas Bill to Increase Transparency in Public Records Law Left in Limbo Despite Passing Legislature
#Texas lawmakers passed more than 1,300 bills before the end of this year’s contentious legislative session, quickly sending them to Gov. #GregAbbott for consideration.
All of them but one.
A bill that would close a long-standing loophole in state law that allows officials to withhold law enforcement records if no one was convicted in a case.
After #Musk's most recent misdeeds (e.g. (4)), the many user complaints, and the second departure in this function within just a few months it seems obvious that the #BorgSite is...
"Twitter to pull back from Europe’s #disinformation crusade", of which it was a co-signatory, and with which it did not comply. #Twitter "was the only tech giant that failed to meet its #transparency obligations under quarterly reports mandated under the code of practice."
"An email sent to Twitter for comment was returned with a poop emoji."
BREAKING: The Cabinet Office is refusing to hand information about Boris Johnson’s latest alleged lockdown breaches to the official Covid-19 inquiry – and has removed key details from other evidence it has already shared, a damning letter from the inquiry’s chair has revealed.
I just started using GitHub CoPilot for VSCode, and.. wow. This basically does 50-80% of the scut work, meaning I can crank stuff out 2-5x faster and focus on the higher level stuff and not spend time thinking about "did I remember to handle error X when. grab a web page." Also, it'll reduce the amount of typing, which is good for avoiding RSI. At $19/month/user for a team, the ROI on this is like... 20-30 minutes?
@kurtseifried
Indeed. I'm 100% in favor of AI helping us think better. But personally I wouldn't get into a self driving car trained to give me a thrill ride. Fortunately most self-driving car companies are grounded in reality. Copilot is not. YouChat and perplexity.ai are grounded. Google and ChatGPT are not (I haven't researched BingChat). For self-driving tech I prefer Comma.ai for my car, #transparency is important.
#Transparency in many forms will be key for the uptake of #AI and yet the tendency of many stakeholders is the opposite. This lose-lose game is not very smart and will slow down what otherwise could be great benefits for companies and societies. 3/4
DataBreaches looks for provisions in settlements that require improved data security. Some settlements do not seem to include much provision for that. And some keep those provisions confidential. In these two cases, one kept it confidential but the other one spelled out changes.
Would love to see some lawyers go through all the settlements involving patient data and see how much improvement in data protection is being written into settlements to reduce risk of future attacks.
If an entity decides to ignore contacts or demands from attackers, that's somewhat understandable. But if the threat actors added you to their leak site, maybe you should say something?
We shouldn't just have silencing, blocking and other #moderationtechniques - we also need concepts of reasoning, warnings and reprieve in #ActivityPub. These should be created as part of the #moderation process and published to explain a decision, both to the instance members and other instances' moderators.
Today, @eff and #ACLU filed a brief in support of Twitter’s effort to get an appeals court to reconsider its dangerous opinion enforcing a government gag order on Twitter’s 2013 transparency report. #twitter#gagorder#privacy
These Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs) impact our lives greatly.
That is why we have designated 17 VLOPs and 2 VLOSEs to meet the full range of new obligations under our Digital Services Act (#DSA) within four months.
This will empower users, protect minors, reduce disinformation and increase #transparency.
