The stream returns today, as Prof Keen emerges from the release of Ravel with a revamped look and a new and marvelous host, Dave Foulkes.

stream starts @9 am PST, be there or be square.

An amazingly rough start to the show. Kathleen’s internet struggled and the lag made conversation a challenge.

In all this amazing display of the Earth’s magnetosphere, remember it’s deflecting the relentless cascade of deadly solar and cosmic radiation washing the Earth every day and hour, and turning it into wonder. It’s a precious cloak of protection against a harsh universe, unique in our solar system, securing our atmosphere. Irreplaceable.

Take time to appreciate that.

Read a thread about hiring processes and corporations etc. It make me think about how incredibly much smaller the ideal company size is than the companies we work for today. Has anyone ever noticed how incredibly productive Anarchist groups of open source software developers are compared to... Google/Facebook/IBM/Microsoft/Whatever? Like, the Slashdot software was written by a couple of guys, Mastodon by a couple of guys, Git was created by Linus Torvalds and passed off to a few tens of people?

It’s so funny to here these guys spout off next to a historian explaining history. This is why we need managers and CEOs :srofl:

Das Geld Syndrom in a nutshell. There’s a reason why every major religion sanctions usury. It is wealth transfer from labor through business to creditors.

It’s money “destruction” in the sense of purchasing power destruction, the essence of inflation or debasing the currency. It has a lethal consequence of concentrating power.

The one measure that circumvents this decay is demurrage. Gesell formalized it in the concept of Freigeld.

"Randomized trials cannot address all causal questions of importance in medicine and health policy and may have limited generalizability; thus, investigators may need to use observational studies as a source of evidence to address causal questions. The challenge, then, is to balance the importance of addressing the causal questions for which observational studies are needed with caution regarding the reliance on strong assumptions to support causal conclusions."

Depends on which ones. They are not all the same, but the ones that submit to academic, empirical and mathematical rigor fight an up hill battle for air time. Consider that the tech bro guys in Silicon Valley consider obeisance to neoclassical and Austrian economics as a prerequisite to vote.

There is a different discipline out there punching to get through.

And this will happen over and over and over. The water management facility of the destroyed dam, for flood control, hydro, irrigation, municipal and industrial water supply is gone, as it is for each dam or flood control system destroyed. Their functions are no more. Dams dotted all over the world are unfit for purpose, built for a climate that no longer exists. They will fall when faced with extreme weather.

So this is not to be critical of the people posting about it, I understand how they feel and I agree with them - but... the reason Trump openly soliciting a $1B bribe for his campaign landed in the public consciousness like a wet fart is because post Citizens United we all know this is how American politics actually works. Should it? Fuck no. But EVERYONE in charge loves it, so this is, once again, libs howling that Trump didn't play Simon Says right. And that's why nobody really cares.

So if a free market works to optimize stuff by maximizing efficiency, and people are perfectly clairvoyant utility maximizing beings people would have gone vegan in order to maximize agricultural output, defined as max caloric return for humans.

But instead the lion’s share of output goes to maximizing calories for cows, pigs and chickens. Despite the fact they can convert non edible (for people) organic matter into human calories.

In terms of degrowth, I think it will come to local measures to solve real problems. The US Housing crisis as a consequence of the suburban experiment/ car-centricity is one example.

The measures to resolve this crisis, build resilience and adapt to extreme weather all require locality (by this I mean various levels of self sufficiency). The very texture of climate change ruins the predicates for modernity, a mild stable climate.

Remember folks, mainstream economists assert that 3C warming is OKEY-DOKEY. They also put universities on a commerce footing and lobbied for debt based higher education.

They also say they are a scientific discipline, because they believe that humans operate on a rational basis. Of course, they demonstrate highest evidence regarding that assertion & their rationale attainment. ;)
