From the Internet (not my words):

● X-Men is about civil rights. If you didn't get that, you didn't get X-Men.

● Black Panther is about civil rights. If you didn't get that, you didn't get Black Panther.

● Captain America literally fought the Nazis. He is the embodiment of fighting the alt-right. If you didn't get that, you didn't get Captain America.

● The Empire in Star Wars is fascist. The Rebel alliance is Anti-Fascist. If you didn't get that, you didn't get Star Wars.

kinda weird that "big tech" refers to stuff like google — a company that basically only makes website, data centers and pocket computers — and not, like, siemens — a massive conglomerate churning out steam turbines, trains, HVAC systems, MRIs, factory machinery, whatever

saddestrobots,
@saddestrobots@jorts.horse avatar

i am not saying that siemens is good, mainly that it's striking how when people in the 1980s imagined "cyberpunk" they had all these companies that literally built the world carving it up (with their own financial services, real estate, and security subdivisions) and now so much of the evil empire is just dipshits who want to break your browser so they can better serve you ads

HN thread about my Hackintosh article is kinda typical of how I remember HN commentaries.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39728146

The largest thread if slightly off-topic discussion about diminishing options for DIY approach to cars, computers — Linux featuring prominently, of course — etc.

When you collapse that thread, it becomes far more interesting (to me).

Next is very real look at where Apple is today: people are buying Apple Silicon Macs because of the hardware and not its OS.

That macOS is not worth it to many enthusiasts is quite a reversal from 8-10+ years ago. That should be the cause of concern for anyone higher-up in the macOS product owner hierarchy at Apple.

The funniest thing about Donald Trump is that he is so routinely honest in public—“I will be a dictator,” “there will be violence if I lose”—and yet the majority of people are so concerned about decorum, so terrified of appearing to overreact, that the American political system just plods along as if he hadn’t said what he said.

Very little is known about the far side of the Milky Way because of the gas and dust embedded in the plane, especially near the galactic core. Thanks to its infrared instruments, the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman telescope can peer through this veil, seeing whatever's on the other side. Astronomers are planning a systematic survey of the far side of the Milky Way and could discover over 100 billion objects (mostly stars) in only a month.

“But AI is cheap!”

It’s not, it has horrendous hardware, server housing and water and power requirements; it’s just that VCs are financing it now so you get in on the hype and later they will charge you rent and it will cost you way more—with inferior results—than, you know, hiring the writers and artists it’s stealing from, but those will be gone by then.

When I temped for a clipping bureau, I used to go, just after midnight, to pick up hot-off-the-presses copies of the early edition, from the Trib Tower lobby, and from the Sun-Times docks where trucks were being loaded to fan out all across the city.
Along with the corridor at the old Sun-Times building that looked out over the whirring presses, it was the act of creating a physical newspaper as a kind of theatre of democracy. All vanished.

Today, the L.A. Times printing plant puts out its last edition.
