Next launch window is tomorrow at 10:11 pm ET, but again it's not clear whether we'll be able to recycle and try again that soon. We'll see if I'm back here tomorrow night live posting!!

@skrishna a bit disappointing but I'm extremely happy we've learned something from past experience about not launching just because there's so much excitement and momentum to do it.

Cool map showing the date of the most recent total eclipse for every point in Indiana. Made by the Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium at Butler University.

Great concept, and I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar map for a larger area, ideally an interactive map for the entire world where you can see the year of the last eclipse wherever you are. The data is available, so surely someone has made such a map?

Wijfi,
@Wijfi@fosstodon.org avatar

@akkana @alan also - would annular eclipses count? I guess if it were interactive you could toggle it but makes calculating them much more complicated. Definitely possible though. @fraser have any ideas?

@Jaden2
Not trying to defend Israel but it is important to acknowledge that Hamas is (and has in the past) fired rockets from hospitals, schools, and un buildings. It's how they fight such an asymmetrical war against a much more powerful army because the strategy leaves Israel with no nice options in response. Hamas also killed 100s of Israeli children and is holding children hostage because Israel also hasn't given Hamas any nice options for resisting the blockade and occupation.

    Does anyone know of a good sleep tracking app for Android that is 1) free and 2) doesn't collect all of your data and store it on the cloud? All I want is something that uses accelerometer data to monitor movement, gives a nice graph of that data every morning, and won't end up on a server farm somewhere, and that is a surprisingly difficult thing to find. Honestly just about ready to code it up myself and release an APK on GitHub lol

    I have made the extremely difficult decision to resign from the Processing Foundation. I am absolutely heartbroken, and have not slept well for months.

    Casey and I started the Foundation with Dan as a way to make the Processing project more sustainable. For years it had been just Casey and me, supporting thousands and thousands of users.

    Back in 2017, I was diagnosed with cancer just weeks after my second child was born. I took a break from participating directly with the Board.

    Last fall, with urging from Casey, who was planning to leave, I tried to return to an active role with the Board.

    It was a strange experience; I was soon shocked to learn that the Foundation spent nearly $800,000 last year. $0 of that went to Processing 4.

    This year, the proposed Foundation budget is around $1.2 million. But for Processing, there is budget for just two people: one developer, one community lead.

    You know what that sounds like? The reason we started a Foundation in the first place. Two people is not enough for all of the Processing software projects that live at the processing.org domains, not just the original software, but also releases for Android, Python, Raspberry Pi, etc.

    There have been two million downloads of even just the 4.0 releases, and there remains consistently about 100,000 unique users a month.

    Two people is not enough to sustain the current community, but more importantly, not enough to move the project in new directions—more languages, platforms, devices; broadening the audience further.

    We're very much back in the same place as when we started in 2001: coding is still too obtuse and oblique, and the only way to fix that is to reduce barriers that will make coding accessible to more people.

    I have continued to work on the Processing software since resigning from the Foundation—since walking away only punishes our users—but it's really difficult. There's no future in this current structure.

    From the outset, the project was always a 50-50 split between internal (software development) and external (the community, the documentation, examples, etc). The Foundation has lost all sense of balance.

    It's a depressing outcome following the $10 million windfall of donations. It's just co-opting the work that I've done for 22 years: building the software and supporting the community; both in years past when it was an unknown project, or in more recent years when keeping things working wasn't always fun, but was still important for the community that relied on it.

    The situation is especially difficult for me because it has been created by the people who most benefited from all that work I did, and from people I trusted as friends.

    The Processing software and its community deserve better, and need a better home than the “Processing” Foundation.

    Wijfi,
    @Wijfi@fosstodon.org avatar

    @benfry

    I don't think it's an understatement to say Processing was THE reason I got into graphics programming 10ish years ago and changed my career and my life into what it is now. Thank you for all the work you've done and I hope you realize that your work was not in vain even if the foundation has become unrecognizable. You've changed a lot of lives and put a lot of good into the world with it!

    I just bought GTAIII, VC and SA bundle for $30. Seemed like a good deal, I liked those games, so I was like why not?

    The GOP thinks the answer to states where they are losing on issues like abortion and gerrymandering is to increase their attacks upon democracy. They did this in Wisconsin, trying to impeach Justice Janet Protasiewicz after she was duly elected. They did it in Ohio, trying to game the system with Issue 1. The voters are on to them, and they're getting really pissed off. It’s not a good look, and they will remember in 2024.

    The received cultural mythology of 9/11 is so far from my actual lived experience of being an adult New Yorker on that day that it breaks my brain (and my heart) to even try to reconcile the two. For those who are younger, question nearly all of the political framing you hear about that day. All these years later, it’s clear Bin Laden got nearly all he wanted, thanks to the predictability of American reactionaries.

Modi's govnt in India, but he is willing to sue California over a transparency law that closely resembles what his buddies were asking Congress to do to old Twitter until they all of a sudden they dropped it when he took over.
