So there you have it. Twitter under Elon is the inspiration for Reddit's new business vision. That explains so much of what we're seeing.

I had no idea Antarctic sea ice has failed to form this year (to the extent that it is expected to form for this time of the year; it's still forming, just MUCH less than expected) despite being in the dead of winter. Seriously people, it's 5 sigma below normal sea ice there! Wtf are we doing?!

Just finished reading "The Internet Con: How to seize the means of computation" by @pluralistic . Surprisingly, a lot of the book is about interoperability and making it happen legally. For me, this hit really hard because of how involved my work is around both. Key takeaway for me is that if we want to create a better tech society, we need to open up stuff with interoperability to drive innovation and competition rather than just regulate big tech expecting them to behave.

@harsh @pluralistic enshrining interoperability into law would also be nice.

The Reddit drama is morphing into a confrontation that can only be described as Black mirror-esque in nature. Dissenters in subreddits gone dark are being approached by the company to conspire in toppling their top moderators to restore their subreddits, and people are finally realising that even if they delete their account, Reddit's t&c gives them complete and irrevocable ownership of their content. They will never delete that valuable content. Reddit is dead. Glory to the

‘In case I die, I need to publish this paper’: scientist who left the lab to fight in Ukraine

A Ukrainian scientist and soldier tells the world about how war has shaped his perspective on science and war: they cannot be separate. They're inextricably linked. Which is why Russia targets Ukrainian academic centres. I would add that this can extend to every part of the civilian sector. This is what total war looks like.

Here's the thing: the "original waterfall methodology paper" (which does not even use the word Waterfall) advocated for an iterative approach to software development. Unfortunately, nobody got past figure 2 of 10 and the DOD compounded the problem by turning the misconception into a standard. In other words, Agile is nothing new. It is a rediscovery borne out of not practicing RTFM.

To put into context, the concentration of tritium in your drinking water is way more than in the water they're discharging into the ocean. The issue has been so politicised it's ridiculous.

Conversely, the Japanese government has not really done any meaningful consultations with its citizens hence the angst. See more context in this thread🧵: https://fedibird.com/

Everybody keeps raving about building super apps but I wonder why nobody considers the possibility that web browsers are already kind of like super apps with a more level playing field (which may perhaps be the "problem"; no one has a real monopoly over the web).

Brilliant video on how the invention of the clock eroded workers' leisure time, and how the pocket watch empowered workers to discover how their bosses were tampering with the clocks to make people work more for less. This is an example of how technological innovation can enable tyranny. We must learn from history. Share this with your boss and union 😉

While the saner parts of the world rightly scoff at the "alien" spectacle shown off at Mexico's Congress, this spectacle is being powered by something far more sinister: grave robbing and tomb desecration in Peru. It's inhumane and grotesque and it must stop. Demand for so called "alien" evidence must stop. There are no aliens, only an illegal and unethical capitalist pipeline for rearranged body parts you fools! 😡

It's quite amazing that our attempts at reducing pollution from sulphur rich fuels for ships is adding on to global warming. We really don't understand our complex climate system.

The managerial culture that allowed Nurse Letby to go on a killing spree for so long is not an exception. It is the norm; systemic to the NHS. I don't know what kind of reform is needed to root out this culture, but it hurts staff, minorities especially. If anyone tries to raise concerns for whatever reason, management dismisses them, bullies them into submission before packing them off to the GMC for a career disrupting tribunal.

I love how has slapped a ban on seafood imports from because of the water discharge amidst its own environmental catastrophes. This water is really not so dangerous: it only contains tritium that has been diluted because we can't remove tritium from water. The amount present is way below WHO's limit. It seems uninformed political discourse has turned nuclear physics and facts into a boogeyman that is to be feared no matter what which is utterly ridiculous.

I’ve written up a post about the background and plan for this server https://commonscomputer.com/t/tft-rocks-mastodon-server-move/13

  • old https://toolsforthought.rocks Mastodon Server is 42EU/month, to be shutdown end of November
  • this https://toolsforthought.social is much cheaper, and Boris will run it for a year no matter what
  • follow Mastodon migration to move here, or to some other server
  • get involved if you want to run this server!
