"What did you do to my laptop?!"

The young mage beamed before noting the anger and dismay; deflating slightly, "I m-made it more secure?"

"You carved runes into the letters! And all around the lid, the base, there's goo on the camera..."

"T-the glyphs protect you from typos, battery failure, spam and spy-ware."

"Oh. Sorry technomancy wasn't a thing when I was your age. Thank you."

"That's okay, mom."

"What?"

"Er, I mean, ma'am!"

anakin78z,

@samhainnight Assuming you mean the sewage pipes (I thought I saw you post about that), our town is always trying to get us to get extra insurance for them, because they know how old the pipes are, and that regular home insurance doesn't cover them. I have no idea why they are separate.

anakin78z,

@Skepticat OK, I'll be that person: Raw flour and eggs are totally not safe to eat.

Pillsbury recently adjusted their cookie dough recipe so that it can be eaten raw, because it knew that people ignored warnings.

You can also make your own edible cookie dough: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/255365/edible-cookie-dough/

Pretty sure neither qualifies as raw though.

@lizzard @adhd We switched to home schooling. Probably not what you want to hear, but we never found a solution for school, and she's much happier now.
We were told to get a 504 plan (in the US), but that wasn't as straightforward as it first sounded, so it may come down to how your school handles it.

What, if anything, makes mood fundamentally different from memory?

My new piece in @thetransmitter

https://www.thetransmitter.org/the-big-picture/what-if-anything-makes-mood-fundamentally-different-from-memory/

You might hear, "Mood disorders are psychological, not biological." What does that even mean? Here I lay out not just this but five different clusters of positions around what mood and mood disorders are (along with a six that you might suspect but no one adopts).

I also asked researchers to chime in on the most effective path forward for mood research. The diversity of opinions is insightful, and telling.

In my own mind, mood is among the most challenging functions that exist. We'll need all hands (and all perspectives) on deck.

Insights from: @awaisaftab, Austin Coley, @eikofried, Steve Hyman, @amygdaloid, Lisa Monteggia, @russpoldrack, Lauren Ross, Robb Rutledge, Maryma Shanechi, Shan Siddiqi, and Eric Turkheimer

@NicoleCRust @thetransmitter @awaisaftab @eikofried @amygdaloid @russpoldrack

Years of dealing with a mood disorder have taught me that it's definitely biological, with no doubt in my mind about it. Mindfulness, diet, exercise & such might (only might) reduce severity, and might help manage, but it will not prevent an episode from happening.

What sorts of things have folks been doing to counter loneliness and connect with other humans?

It can be anything - big community building things, small touches with friends, online or irl.

@vlrny @lonelinesscorps Started playing pickleball.

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@mograph.social avatar

@vlrny @lonelinesscorps It's the fastest growing sport in America! (or so I've heard).
It's kind of similar to tennis, but usually played with 4 people, 2 on each side. There's less running, and it's a bit more quick trigger type of play.
The nice thing is that there seem to be 'open' games everywhere, where you can just show up and join a game at certain times. In my small town there are usually 6-13 people there.
It does not involve actual pickles, but my paddle has a pickle on it 😛

I've taken two different approaches to sports in

The first was sports as a tool.

https://fullmoonstorytelling.com/2023/05/03/sports-dungeons-and-dragons-tool/

The second was more elaborate, and leaned into what can do with skills and expertise dice.

Once the Elysians kickstarter is fulfilled I'll link you up with where you can add that to your game

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@mograph.social avatar

@bedirthan One of the first times I played D&D with my kids I wanted to have a non-violent skills challenge, so I came up with a race with obstacles, not unlike some of the mud run 5k races in the real world. To this day the kids will say: "Hey, can we play D&D? No, the one with the running and jumping."

And I'll have no idea what to do, because I made most of it up on the fly, and didn't keep any notes on it.

Hey bookish folks, I'd love your help! How do you find new-to-you books to read?

I'm trying to figure out where to advertise my books now that I have a fourth book out ( https://buy.bookfunnel.com/vxvlyi6b0v ). I'm rather unknown so can't spend big $$ but it's hard to know where is best to find readers. And yet, it's hard to have a budget without readers, too!

@bookstodon @sffbookclub @fantasy

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@mograph.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon @sffbookclub @fantasy

The main ways I find new books:

  1. Look at the 'now available' section in the Libby app, and scroll until something resonates with me
  2. Read random 'top 10 in this genre' or 'if you liked this book, check out...' lists online. Google seems to recommend them to me sometimes. I'll go through and add a bunch to my to-read list.
  3. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I'll google 'books like ...' with a title of a book I liked.

Hope that helps.

During the product reveals at PAX U the team also shared a way that fewer stories will be able to be told via D&D -- a huge shift from what they've done in 5th edition's evolution.

http://fullmoonstorytelling.com/2023/12/03/changes-coming-to-5e-backgrounds-further-reduce-story/

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@mograph.social avatar

@bedirthan Well, there's a very high chance that they did some research and found that 90+% of players go with the sample backgrounds, so they went all in on that. But I've never met a DM who said you have to use them.
We've actually mostly ignored them in our games. Not sure why... we just wrote our own background stories and picked background features that seemed to match.
