Proposal of the day: anyone writing a thesis, proposal or description of their scientific work should first be made to stare at a large sign that goes something like this:

โ€œWe are tired of having to work out whether thereโ€™s any actual thinking going on inside the nozzle producing these fountains of pompous words. Stop trying to sound clever and just say what needs to be said as clearly and simply as possible. We can see through you.

A guide to some Fediverse terms:

Toot = Post (named after the Mastodon mascot, in theory)

Favourite = Like (there's a separate Bookmark function if you really want to keep track of posts)

Boost = Re-Tweet, shares a post with your followers

Instance = Server = The site you signed up on, each server is independent

Birdsite = Hellsite = Twitter

Fediverse = This place you're on right now, reading this. Mastodon is one kind of server on here, but there are many other types.

I feel like I shouldnโ€™t have to say this, but here we are.

If you get into a disagreement with someone here or for whatever reason the person youโ€™re messaging with asks you to disengage, just stop. Iโ€™ve been around since the dawn of online arguments and Iโ€™ve never seen a person realize the error of their ways because someone was trolling and/or being an asshole to them in the replies.

If someone asks you to stop, stop. If they block you, take a cue from Elsa and Let It Go. Donโ€™t find alternate ways to continue engaging. Iโ€™m sure it the parting shot feels good, or you think you have the perfect reply to help them see the reality of a situation, but it isnโ€™t so.

Please, just stop and think: AITA in this situation?

@juddlegum They did not apologize for the quote. They apologized for not having the tact and finesse to for saying out loud the part they should keep quiet in their thoughts.

Claiming that a commitment to openness requires giving Meta access to your posts, that you somehow must cooperate with them or allow them into your community is another of those occasions when itโ€™s obvious that someone doesnโ€™t understand that freedom of association also includes the ability to choose not to associate โ€“ and that freedom of association is, if anything, an even more important right than freedom of speech. Itโ€™s the freedom not to have to listen.

Exactly. They can have their free speech, and so can I, but more importantly, it does not mean I have to listen or give them the time of day.

With the help of the NYT Opinion segment mentioning my Abandoned America podcast yesterday and the new release of the SS United States episode today, I'm going to smash my record for plays in a single day today. Previous high was 849 and I'm at 1070 already.

I know metrics are boring but after working really hard for a year on this it's really nice to feel like it's picking up some momentum. Huge thanks to all who have listened to it, shared it, and kept me going with kind words โค๏ธ
