There are many things to like about the Fediverse but the overabundance of people who take every opportunity to assume you don't understand simple or obvious concepts so they can explain them to you like you're four - particularly when you're clearly joking about something - is not one of them

I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but here we are.

If you get into a disagreement with someone here or for whatever reason the person you’re messaging with asks you to disengage, just stop. I’ve been around since the dawn of online arguments and I’ve never seen a person realize the error of their ways because someone was trolling and/or being an asshole to them in the replies.

If someone asks you to stop, stop. If they block you, take a cue from Elsa and Let It Go. Don’t find alternate ways to continue engaging. I’m sure it the parting shot feels good, or you think you have the perfect reply to help them see the reality of a situation, but it isn’t so.

Please, just stop and think: AITA in this situation?

A guide to some Fediverse terms:

Toot = Post (named after the Mastodon mascot, in theory)

Favourite = Like (there's a separate Bookmark function if you really want to keep track of posts)

Boost = Re-Tweet, shares a post with your followers

Instance = Server = The site you signed up on, each server is independent

Birdsite = Hellsite = Twitter

Fediverse = This place you're on right now, reading this. Mastodon is one kind of server on here, but there are many other types.

@mishellbaker I hear ya, big reason I have a self imposed moratorium on reading anything political/social issues/activist. It's either that or my sanity, and I prefer my sanity.

Does not mean something does not slip into the feed, but when that happens, I post cute kittens shortly after for cleansing.

Proposal of the day: anyone writing a thesis, proposal or description of their scientific work should first be made to stare at a large sign that goes something like this:

“We are tired of having to work out whether there’s any actual thinking going on inside the nozzle producing these fountains of pompous words. Stop trying to sound clever and just say what needs to be said as clearly and simply as possible. We can see through you.
