Apple apologizes for iPad ad

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” said Tor Myhren, the company’s VP of marketing communications. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Interestingly, Google used the same language to conclude its apology for its generative AI’s historical depictions of race. It explained its intention with flowery language and then said “But it’s missing the mark here”.

I wonder if we’ll be seeing more of this type of response to corporate tone-deafness (a generous term) going forward. Big “I’m sorry you feel that way (but this isn’t indicative of any problems with me)” vibes.

@Seirdy Right on the mark here: “It reads like an apology to investors for making people unhappy, not an apology to the people who got angry.”

I'm sure this is true for many people, but I'm having the opposite experience, tbh. Coding (mostly) for myself, and taking a lot of care to make it long term maintainable, has been incredibly restorative for me. Keeping a code base tidy is so much more relaxing than constant tip toeing around a bunch of hazardous piles of legacy junk that you're not allowed to fix.

@jenniferplusplus I'm more like that too. I also really like the idea of solving problems for reasons other than profit motive.
I don't want to sell my code. I just want to make it and give it freely to anyone it might help.

@todrobbins @Meyerweb reminds me that automatically deleting emails is considered a corporate best practice. Reduces storage cost as well as cost of filtering and labeling data when you’re going through the discovery part of a legal case, and — not explicitly in the CISSP study material — reduces the likelihood of you being convicted for past crimes.

Have you thought at all, for even a minute, about the business model of OpenAI?

In one sentence: "We will take every actual human-created content, the golden egg, from everyone, without permission, and then we will use it to sell plausible made-up shit, simultaneously choking out the creation of all new human-created content, the goose."

Ponzi was vastly more sophisticated than this.

I've long regarded extractive capitalism as corrupt, but I had no idea they were all so stupid.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly @GeePawHill apologists and evangelists keep saying things about emergent properties, but you’re starting with what is - to a first approximation - the sum total of human knowledge in the English language and you get… something that can do a passable shitpost poem about version control or spit out marketing drivel? Yes, that’s more than is obvious from the linear algebra and weights, but look where you started!

No, that all tracks with the sophistication of this “fix”.

Just bought the Middle-Earth Shadow Bundle on Steam. It includes:

  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War Expansion Pass
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Modor
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Modor GOTY Edition Upgrade

The price of each of these individual items is $112.96. But today, I’m paying C$8.99.

@atomicpoet I have the base games already, and they scratch the third-person brawler itch pretty well despite not being as fluid as the Arkham games. Also the Nemesis system was fairly amusing.

@j_bertolotti @atomicpoet I liked the added perks or feats that they got, it added a little variety (not that the Nemesis system is unique in doing this). Although over the course of a full play through the taunts get really old (again, pretty typical).

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔

One thing that's wild to me is that we've gotten fairly solid at building distributed systems that are resilient, workable, and fairly decently designed... As soon as they hit a certain amount of scale, and only then.

So much shit out there just gets slapped together with every single cloud scale mega-cluster service and tool like its a limited edition box of candies that's going out of stock

SWATting would no longer be a problem at all if we abolished SWAT teams.

Maybe having an on demand paramilitary strike force that can be deployed by anyone with a phone and a plausible sounding story was a bad idea to start with.

I think the show is cute, but Gatita, their "cutey-ball cat" is just adorable.

A white cartoon cat dances on a guitar plucking strings with her little feet. She spins in a circle on the guitar while an upbeat tune plays, her tail is held aloft in a happy/greeting pose for cats and her eyes are closed. That background is a splotched red-pink.
