Hey Canadian nerds! I have held the domain registration for regex.ca for a very long time. When I lived in Canada it was my primary domain, but I haven't used it for years. Does anyone on the fediverse have a good use for it?

NEW: WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.
— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards
— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable

"but I'm not using WhatsApp, I'm using <insert different app here>"
"oh, that's inconvenient. Can you maybe just switch to WhatsApp instead?"

Interoperability barely works when all parties have common goals and good intentions. I do not assume meta to have good intentions.

A common assertion is that conferences shouldn't remove anyone who hasn't been convicted in court. This means that conferences can't remove people who scream over speakers, who drunkenly harass other attendees, who shit in the catering, and so on - this may be disruptive, may even be criminal, but even if you saw it happen they haven't been found guilty and so should be allowed to continue attending.

I don't think people want to attend conferences run by people who sincerely believe this.

@mjg59 I reject your single-minded framing of privacy. I do not think that we will reach any kind of consensus here. That's sad, because we also agree on a lot of things. I agree that JA should have been banned from future events. I agree that it should not be up to a single, possibly traumatized, person to raise this particular issue (because this one in particular is widely known) via some kind of official channel. These are points where I think more could have been done.

A moderator of a FB group I frequent has fallen headlong into the “politeness” trap, insisting that participants observe “civility” and “manners” when they post.

Many of you probably already recognize that is a trap. It is a tool used by aristocrats and the powerful to silence dissent, by protesting how the oppressed choose to cry, instead of dealing with why they cry. Southern slaveowners were probably the most polite bunch of folks you’ll ever know.

Focus on what’s important: kindess, empathy, respect, tolerance. And tell politeness to go fuck itself.

Ia used to spend time on some Discord server, and in 2021 some anti-vaxxers spilled misinformation and lies about vaccinations. I cared about that community, so I debunked this with sources, actual news articles and studies. I was told to not take up as much space with "my" topic. They instated a rule making all talk about "loaded" topics impossible.

I left that community.

Oh wow I thought it was weird that the Oldest House in Control is in New York City as opposed to somewhere like DC but this seems to make it pretty obvious they just based it on this actual real-world building in NYC, a 30-story brutalist skyscraper with no windows whatsoever which was revealed by the Snowden disclosures to contain NSA work sites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF4EUM8CwT4

Bei Congstar gibt's auf der Website jetzt keinen offensichtlichen Login mehr. Man verweist dort auf die App. Erst über den Telefon-Support erhält man dann gnädigerweise einen Link zugesandt. Ich kann ohne Weiteres im Moment nichtmal meine Rechnungen herunterladen.

Hey Crowd, haben wir eigentlich einen Weg, Talks vom vorläufigen Fahrplan über den Fahrplan, (vielleicht sogar über die Apps), über die Veranstaltung und dann über media.ccc.de zu synchronisieren? Ich hab das Gefühl, ich gehe die Liste von Talks 20 Mal durch, weil ich jeweils irgendwo irgendwelche Favoriten markiere, und dann aber meine gesammelten Favoriten manuell ins nächste Tool übertragen muss? Wie macht ihr das?

Free and Software is exceptionally bad at preserving its -not source code history- I mean how projects overall evolved and who was responsible for what. This is all basically lore handed from one person to the next. At best it is engraved on some obscure issue tracker that you can't know about unless you were there to witness it.

#Firefox lets you open a new window by shift-clicking a link. That's probably not news to any of you. I use this all the time.

It also lets you open an URL you TYPE in a new window by hitting Shift+Enter :-D That's going into my rotation!
