How come serial killers never go after Republicans? Why must they always go after the innocent instead?

dennis_jernberg,

@shoq Of course, if they went after Republicans they'd be called "terrorists" instead of "serial killers"

I may be off base here, but I keep hearing people say is confusing and I have no clue how anyone could possibly feel that way.

It's really not that complicated. Once you pick the server you want to create your account on it is pretty straightforward. Just like any other microblog network.

I also keep hearing the misconception that you can't follow people who aren't on your instance. How has it gotten this reputation? It seems really easy to me.

I’ve been a musician most of my life and I’ve been around a lot of people who were blasted on cocaine, and it couldn’t be more obvious that ain’t Joe Biden’s thing.

dennis_jernberg,

@Green_Footballs Definitely Trump Jr's thing though, and sure enough he's projecting like seven-story Imax. As for the rest of his daddy's personality cult, all I have to say is wishful thinking's a hell of a drug.

Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! 🙂

dennis_jernberg,

@Gargron That's just 70M users signed up. I'm sure a very low percentage of those signed up will stay active after the initial sugar rush, especially once the non-celebrities/influencers discover how invisible they are there (it's worse in that respect than Twitter ever was).

It's just plain better here in the Fediverse.

Did you sign up for Threads?

#EvanPoll #poll

dennis_jernberg,

@evan I answered "strong no", but my real answer's more like "never, ever".

MattBinder, to random
@MattBinder@mastodon.social avatar

when Threads launched, a number of right wing accounts with a history of posting misinformation on other platforms were flagged with a warning label informing users that they “repeatedly posted false information”

however, it appears Threads has now removed these labels

a Meta spokesperson told Donald Trump Jr. that his account was flagged in “error” and that it’s since “been fixed”

https://mashable.com/article/threads-false-information-label-donald-trump-jr-error

dennis_jernberg,

@MattBinder Well, well, well. I had a feeling this Threads thing was going to be a new hellsite, and this being the new sister platform to existing hellsites Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, but of course Zuck would want to appropriate Twitter's dumpster fire for himself. Sure enough.

I'm starting to think, if my instance doesn't defederate with threads(dot)net, I'll block it myself.

My hatred of Facebook is overwhelming me. This must be what PTSD feels like. What the fuck is wrong with everyone? Rushing to Instagram because of Elmo Musk is like begging for aggressive brain cancer because ordinary brain cancer had gotten dull.

dennis_jernberg,

@shoq From what I've read so far, most of the people signing up for Threads were already on Instagram and Facebook, and some of those just wanted to be part of a really big number (70M at last count).

I'm a diehard Facebook hater myself, but I'm not worried, because big numbers on launch don't measure staying power. I was on Google+ from day 2 after all.

I'm not gonna join Threads.

Fuck Zuckerberg and everything he touches.

But what if Threads kills Masto and this place empties and becomes irrelevant?

Don't I want to be where all the people have gone?

Nope.

I don't care. I'd rather have zero social media than Zuckerberg.

Sure, I love Mast at the moment but if it went, I'd survive.*

I miss the vibrant place uk.music.alternative used to be in the late '90s but it's okay, life goes on!

*I personally think it'll be fine!

dennis_jernberg,

@Jyoti I regularly check the Mastodon User Count and it gives me no indication that Masto's in any danger or Threads is taking anybody away.

Threads strikes me as the social media version of a forced meme.

Agree with this piece on IG’s Threads and why it can never truly replicate the magic Twitter once had https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/threads-wont-be-fun-but-it-will-give-brands-a-home-away-from-twitter/?guccounter=1

image/png

dennis_jernberg,

@thomasfuchs @taylorlorenz Don't forget the brands. I'm reading the article and the main point is that Zuck's making Threads the safe space for brands and advertisers that Twitter ceased to be under Musk. The brands are loving it. The influencers might. The rest of us, not so much. But then, Meta platforms are for them and not for us.

About now, ’s app is surpassing the size of the . According to mark zuckerberg, it took 7 hours since opening it up for 10 million sign-ups.

Let that sink in. 7 hours for 10 million sign-ups. It took the fediverse … at least 5 years since the standard, and lots of time before that?

This is significantly faster than even the most aggressive projections. At this speed, will be surpassed within weeks not months.

Will they keep their commitment?

dennis_jernberg,

@J12t I heard it's now (at this writing) 50M. Of course that's easy if you make signing up trivial (if you're on Instagram, just one click puts you on Threads too).

As for their ActivityPub commitment, my Mastodon timeline's already showing instance admins declaring they've already blocked Threads...

People joining Threads to spite Elon really need to understand that there’s no such thing as a good billionaire.

Folk mewling outside the door in the rain going "Back on twitter I had a nice group of fellow furry plumbers from Scotland born in the early 80's who are into game boy ROM hacking, I can't find them now," ask around and @ me and people will boost your ask until it rattles around the system enough for you to find your Incredibly Specific group of people. The algorithm here is Folks and Luck, and those as don't ask don't get.
