just a weird guy

I'm a big manufacturing nerd. I enjoy board games and video games. I tend to hit like on a lot of selfies because I think it's neat people put their pictures online.

Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

As always, domestic abuse is the flagship infosec threat model, the one where the victim has the least resources, the least recourse, where they're closest to immediate physical harm.

That this industry has failed at and mostly abandoned the idea of even pretending to try dealing with a threat model that's difficult and unprofitable and mostly hurts women is not news, but this new Windows Recall feature is next-level professional negligence.

ecstaticcling,
@ecstaticcling@pnw.zone avatar

@mhoye It's really tough to develop tools to allow employers to monitor their employees without also making tools that allow abusers to monitor their abusees.

Because our Canadian wildfire smoke is drifting across the US, you might want to share this with your followers.

It is website where you can check the air quality of any US area, simply type in your area code, city, or state for results.

This is what rich people do and then lecture everyone on hard work and long hours.

A Boat Speed Limit Is Pitting Yacht Owners Against Lovers - https://www.wsj.com/us-news/climate-environment/whale-sailors-speed-limit-east-coast-6e4c9799 "Proposed rule would slow boats to 10 knots along the East Coast" hardly much to ask; staggering sense of entitlement from people who fish

ecstaticcling,

@glynmoody Yes. Make the speed limit slower based on vessel draft too. If rich people want their yachts to dock quicker they can invest in developing sea life friendly means of propulsion.

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.

ecstaticcling,
@ecstaticcling@pnw.zone avatar

@RickiTarr My father told me that the hazard lights on older German cars could be set to only flash on one side or the other. So if you pulled off on the right side of the road you could set the left side hazards blinking or vice versa. This was so the battery would drain slower and the lights would keep working longer.

Scott Manley gives us another banger of a story from the Space Shuttle times: STS-37 mission, when the shuttle landed short of the runway because of adverse winds.

I also learnt that the shuttles were coming down at an angle of 20 degrees. In commercial aviation, the typical landing slope is 3.5 degrees, some airports like London City require a "steep landing slope" which 5.5 degrees. And the flying brick called the Space Shuttle was going down at twenty!

Holy shit, this so long overdue.

National Assoc. Realtors (NAR) agrees to drop 6% commission in monopoly lawsuit

I've maintained forever that you are better off finding some places you like and going to a lawyer. Even at like $300 hr, you will always come in cheaper than the commission, with some assurance that your attorney agent knows what to do if things go sideways during your deal.

I'm just wrapping up a 2.6 million commercial sale right now. I have maybe 10 billable hours into the matter. Do the math at whatever billable rate you choose vs. the standard 6% cut from realtors, who basically just check boxes on a form and let the title company do all the real work. You'll see the disconnect.

Celebrate folks. This is a big victory for consumers over monopoly.

❌ "The middle-class is shrinking."

✔️ "The working-class is getting poorer, while the ownership-class is getting richer."

Lower, middle, and upper class definitions simply divide the working-class into income levels, focusing on how much they make rather than how they make it.

This does nothing but divide workers and distract from the real issues of how they're exploited. There are two classes that really matter: the working-class and ownership-class.

Solidarity to ALL the workers!

A thought stirred by a jaded commenter:

One of the many half-truths that gets perpetuated is that new cars have many more issues than old cars and that they're only designed to make it past the warranty period before they crumble apart.

The average age of cars on the road keeps going up. That could not be possible if recently-made cars were in fact less reliable or repairable.

I would submit that the actual problem here? It's mechanics who don't keep up with the times.

ecstaticcling,
@ecstaticcling@pnw.zone avatar

@TechConnectify The frustrating thing with modern cars is that they've been made to be difficult for the owner to service.

My 2016 Ford has a touchscreen infotainment system connected to the rest of the vehicle systems. Why do I have to read the manual to know the difference between a solid or flashing CEL? Why do I need an OBD2 scanner to check the codes and a secret decoder ring to figure out their meaning?
