Do the people stating that Meta can’t possibly “monetize” posts originating from other fedi services not believe that Threads users are going to experience, for example, Mastodon posts as part of their Threads timeline…which is algorithmically populated and will get monetized as soon as Meta flips ads on?

Is there any documented reason not to believe that this is not the most likely outcome?

ekis,
@ekis@mastodon.social avatar

@kissane It depends on if you think all ad revenue should move through a single service and be distributed to its users in a centralized way

Or if you think it would be better to have many severs of varying sizes taking and potentially redistributing revenue.

From ads, but also donations+other models. But lets assume that advertising takes the biggest share

The revenue would be less, since they would be operating smaller scale; but they could also collectively bargin with the advertisers

ekis,
@ekis@mastodon.social avatar

@kissane And it makes sense that instances may eventually pay their top users that bring in advertiser money.

The key difference would be how the money enters and exits the system.

When we assume both are using ActivityPub.

My question is, do you think Meta has the talent to make use of ActivityPub faster than all the hackers being attracted to it after realizing what it is; I know who I'd bet on.

I'll address the comments about Liz Cheney by telling you what Harvard Professors Ziblatt and Levitsky say about how democracies die and how they are saved.

(The book is fabulous and was quite timely when it came out in 2018)

Basically, they said this (page 299):

When one of the candidates (in this case, Trump) goes off the deep end and embraces autocratic methods, what will save the nation is Republicans to switch and vote Democratic . . .

@Teri_Kanefield I'm not angry with Cheney

I think he should be hanged like the ppl at the Nuremberg trials

Not even for massive corruption, the 12 billion USD in cash "lost" on pallets- but for the war crime of invading Iraq that led to genocide, creating a power vacuum that allowed ISIS to form

Liz Cheney benefited from these crimes and could not be in office w/o wealth generated from those crimes

For me tho: its just that she is a bland politician and the weird heredity system we now allow

Several recent studies have shown that well-being seems to level out and plateau at about 75,000 USD/Year.

Happiness and well-being seem to remain essentially unchanged past 120,000 USD/Year.

Meaning that the US, and most likely the world, could literally buy everyone in the country, and possibly the world, happiness.

We just choose not to, a fact I find rather depressing.

@platymew I think you have a reasonable case.

I personally find the whole putting Christmas themes seasonally on software a level of complexity to open source software that just does not belong and potentially (and has in the past) introduced issues.

But if we are going to insist on leaving that useless and potentially dangerous code in, might as well make it a setting and let people pick, or something else more rational and fair.

    Too many files open at once? It is a flaw I tried to point out with the vanilla mastadon and even when I proposed a fix.

    Even in the face of evidence, I was given explanations that reveal a severe lack of knowledge about Ruby/Rack/Rails. Was told greater optimizations could be had elsewhere, despite the change was very simple, quick, and introduced massive improvements.

    I have to build a bigger following to overcome the politics of such claims unfortunately.

    Donald Trump, American Dictator

    Nothing is ever inevitable. But every political analysis needs to start from the recognition that there is an eminently plausible – and fairly straightforward path – from here to autocratic rule.

    New piece – A deep dive into the “dictatorship” debate:

    🧵1/

    https://thomaszimmer.substack.com/p/donald-trump-american-dictator

    ekis,
    @ekis@mastodon.social avatar

    @tzimmer_history It seems odd how everyone never seemed to care that George HW Bush was head of the CIA, became president, then his son became president with the same cabinet

    And the amount of corruption, murder, war, and theft under these two leaders, was that not a threat to democracy?

    Seems odd to treat Trump like he is uniquely evil, when he is more likely a symptom

    And if he is an existential threat then why would Biden be a good choice to run against him? Why not try to win?

    My take on these days is that there are no clever and elegant solutions out there for small scale infrastructure needs, even if those are the majority of the backend systems out there.

    So many things are invented for large-scale and high demand services and then supposedly tickle down to smaller systems.

    The thing is that I don't need a real-time job scheduler for my Rails app image processing pipeline. I really just need a cron job that runs every 10 minutes or so during office hours.

    ekis,
    @ekis@mastodon.social avatar

    @alda I agree with you completely; but I have to argue that people continue to use devops because it leads to massive security issues. I love when they include their private SSH keys in their chef files.
