"Trump is not actually running for a second term—he is running for a forever term," Chris Hayes said.

I'm not so sure that he is, just like I don't think he really was in the beginning of 2016. I think it was just an attention-grabbing PR schtick. Skipping the Iowa debate I think reinforces that thesis.

Now, I think that he knows he can't win, but he's learned how to earn a lot of money campaigning plus he just loves to be given so much attention.

Anyways, he's still fucking dangerous.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@GreenFire Even he wasn’t, there’s plenty of people who would use the situation to clear out a few people they don’t like, and ensure no-one else ever has power though. His rhetorical style is perfect for ”soft fascists” to latch on to.

@crlf @ilovecomputers Also confirmed. I was vegetarian long enough to confirm that (10+ years).

Perhaps it is a matter of gut microbe or other factors, but for me it remained an issue. Moderation in legumes was definitely required to sustain a vegetarian diet for more than a decade.

And talking about his technical credentials, his programming at Paypal was also something that needed to be removed before the platform could gain enough reliability and scale.

Which concludes that Musk should be kept out from issues he doesn’t understand, because he thinks he does.

Anti-Black hair sentiments lead many Black women to use chemical hair relaxers.

However, studies have shown that these products may pose serious health risks.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and I have called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate the safety of these products. Read more: https://www.cleveland.com/news/2023/05/rep-shontel-brown-wants-straight-answers-from-the-fda-on-hair-straighteners.html

@StillIRise1963 @RepShontelBrown If straightening and / or lightening your hair is what gives you better service, social integration and decreases your likelihood of encountering racism (like it does), people having to do this deserve protection. I’m white but know enough that a ”colour blindness”-rhetoric is just newspeak for continuing with those slight acts of micro-racism everyone does without any consciousness of it involved.

Saksassa on noussut melkoinen kohu äitienpäivän ympärille.
(jatkuu >)

@antmetsa @Tuumaru @juuhaa Naulan kantaan.

There should be a global delegation meeting to plan out how we all destroy fascism in our various nations.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@StillIRise1963 But it’s not your grandfather’s fascism for the most part. The illusion of democracy is so much better maintained by the strongman leaders these days.

In the old days, the junta would execute you, now you get planted a fake criminal case to land you in prison.

Before, the leader would tell the media what to write, now he takes away the funding if you publish the wrong things.

Instead of shutting down universities, he switches the staff and drowns them in regulation.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@StillIRise1963 Those who seek power for power’s sake are often very aware of the kind of narrative you need to build.

Even Mussolini held up the impression of Italy being still somehow a republic right until 1939, and there wasn’t internet at those times.

Today the strongman has to work even more through storytelling than ever. But Berlusconi, Erdogan, Orban and Putin have shown the way.

As a programmer, I use -based autocomplete daily.

My career spans almost 30 years now, and there is a issue in which is usually referred to as . It is a combination term from A) code which means the code has bad organisation and lacks structural rules B) mindlessly copying something.

Enough ”doing the same thing over and over again” can slowly turn even the best codebase into a badly organised mess, as the code no longer reflects the big picture.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

that I use is simply perfect for creating copypasta. This can probably boost efficiency for a some junior-level tasks, but relying on it too much can also risk deteriorating the quality of your codebase.

Extrapolating from this to what our society is going to face as ML tools augment our communication, I feel we might need to be prepared for a lot more copypasta that does the job, but with itself in ways that make it harder to see what is actually happening.

Dog A is the real dog
Dog B is the ML

You specify the position, speed, posture and other aspects of dog B, and the model will spit out how the dog would move and bark in the next 2 seconds.

@Diggler67 @panamared27401 This is legit one of the best popularisations of the field of problems underlying the worries.

I like how it really underlines that we are largely looking at the wrong moment in AI: where it becomes better than human excellence.

The moment that counts though, has maybe already passed; Where it surpasses human weaknesses.

This article describes how journalists sent photographs across the Atlantic “instantly” in 1926. The most amazing thing to me is that the image is literally digitized into “pixels” along a helical scanline, quantized into 5 levels of gray—all through analog means.

So utterly fascinating.

An enterprising person could have used the 5 hole punches to encode 32 levels of gray, or used maybe 3 holes to encode 8 levels of gray, saving 40% of the transmission cost at the expense of making the machines more complicated…

Once again Ted Chiang has it exactly right. The immediate danger from is not that it will become sentient and do whatever it wants.
