In a recent podcast, @pluralistic & said he writes a lot cos it's a way to deal with the anxiety he gets about things.
I can relate. I have a lot of thoughts rattling in my head all the time. If I don't externalise them into words, I get overwhelmed, anxious & can't sleep, so I often share them on first because it's quick. Later, I will flesh them out into a post or a entry.
this way is a form of selfcare.

Looking for tips about weekly reviews. They are essential for me to ramp up for the new working week but for some reason I've been avoiding them.
Do you do weekly reviews and what do you do to ensure you do them? ;D

I know cultural appropriation is a biggie in the
But as a person who comes from a country where people happily culturally appropriates from each other, and who descended from who people who culturally appropriated & married into British, Chinese and Malay culture ... I never understood the rage around it in the US.
A quick reminder that the world may look at some issues very differently :)

What newspaper/news channel is good or bad?
When joined recently, I saw much moralisation around it. Personally, I think BBC's journalism standards have dropped a lot, but this is true around the world as puts pressure on media outlets to prize popularity & clickbait over real journalism. That said, no media is ever unbiased. I was a world news editor for a national paper for many years and had the pleasure to 1/3

From MyDramaList's 2023 year summary. This is actually a good reflection of my taste in dramas. (Note the lack of romance dramas lol and lots of wuxias & thrillers hehe.) And apparently 90% of my dramas are rated 7 or 8, and about 8% or so are 9.

An interesting conversation hosted by @geraineon on Mastodon yesterday got me thinking about racism, bias and cringe-worthy depictions of foreign nations in Hollywood and other entertainment.

A that most Chinese folks around the world would know would be Journey to the West (1986).

My dad would tape every episode into VHS and us kids would replay the drama over and over again. It was a sad day when the VHS tapes ended up having mold growing in them, rendering them unwatchable.

Journey to the West is a “shen mo” - a Chinese fantasy genre that revolves around Chinese mythological characters.

I got the wavy hair gene from my mum's side, where almost everyone has wavy/curly hair. My curls are not as prominent, but some days it just decides "I am gonna be crazy today!"
My only got like this after puberty, and before that it was typical ramrod straight and my mum would give me the China doll hairstyle (which I loathed).
Since most Chinese had straight hair this made me even more confused about my already salad cultural roots & feel less .

There's something very annoying about those travel/expat videos that announce to the world that is "cheap" and "affordable". I get that it's true for them, but it comes from a position of privilege - they often earn in US dollars, for one.
The reality for most is very different.
I don't really know why it annoys me though. :blobfoxgooglyconfused:

I really like as a journaling app. But the fact that my very sensitive info is out there in a server thousands of miles away and subject to a company's policy makes me nervous.
That's why I prefer to journal in because it is local-first

"... local-first aims to bring all the advantages of the cloud—ubiquity, sync, and collaborative working, but without the cloud's problems."

Ok I'm so WTF with what @skinnylatte said here that I had to add an anecdote of my own. When I lived in Australia, most Aussies (sorry, the white ones, got to be specific) kept saying how good my English was. I explained that English IS my first language, followed by 3 others. I think they couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that a non-White person could have English as their first language. I speak in a neutral accent so that could also be another reason.

I'll be honest: The transition to having Apri around has been quite a challenge for me. Like, I didn't know that post-cat-adoption blues is a THING. And boy do I have it bad.
I play up to 2-3 hours a day with her, and even that's not enough. And then there's the random play bites and ambushes, which I know...

"It's totally OK to buy the new iPhone every year" - if you are swimming in money, sure! But I never understood this mentality. 80% of the phones were hand me downs from my dad who buys smartphones like I buy cat litter.
Personally, I just dont want to add more trash to the rubbish heap. Second, there's this thing called money...

Why productivity hacks do not work for women - cos they are written a lot of times by men who have women to take care of childcare and other chores!

But seriously, I know some men do contribute to household chores. But unfortunately, at least in Asia, the burden is still heavily on women.

Tempted to stop using as a task manager for work and use or heck, Jira. But I like how I can connect my project notes with my tasks in Obsidian. Just that as a task manager, it isn't as robust as it should be.

Bro: How did you come up with my name?
Dad: It was the only name I could think of at that time.
Bro: ...
Dad: What? They only gave me 5 minutes to fill in the name part of the birth cert.

I swear this is so classic Asian parents 🤣 Super unromantic to a fault 🤣
