because I'm furnishing an apartment from semi-scratch I've ordered a LOT of things online and...

this is the 6th time this morning a delivery person calls me to know if I'm home and...

I thought it was safe to leave home 3 calls ago 😬

mahmoudajawad,

@fasterthanlime I don't know when to be glad; When delivery guys don't make this AOT call and force me to expect delivery any moment the fail to deliver, or when they don't and I miss it.

Still struggling getting Hearthstone up and running on OpenSuSE. Lutris doesn't work, Bottles doesn't work, and tonight I tried to install it through Steam. Always gets stuck at the update mechanism before the Battle.net install.

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast you had it run on any other distro before?

mahmoudajawad, to openSUSE

Shocked! What black magic is this? How come is able to determine its future with this thing called "survey"? I thought distros (like ) want to figure out what to focus on need to install spyware disguised as telemetry software using dark patterns.

Dealing with as a developer is fine...
Until you also have to deal with servers

I still have to see a Node error message that clearly identifies the real problem
can't count the hours lost in trying to understand what goes wrong and where

mahmoudajawad,

@dgoosens what do you mean? Error messages are very clear. "undefined" has no attribute "undefined".

Just spent a couple of hours slicing up the first day of #GUADEC2023 streams into individual videos, thanks to:

• A reminder from @BrodieOnLinux
• A super amazing YouTube commenter who provided timestamps as a starting point
• Parabolic to download the entirety of GUADEC 2023 talks in original quality and format, in one go
• Video Trimmer to losslessly trim the talks

And… it wasn’t too bad!

#GUADEC #GNOME #OpenSource #Flathub

mahmoudajawad,

@cassidy approach to keep things so minimal is two-edged; This could've been a simple extra function in Video application, but it would've opened the doors for more functions to be added, breaking the semantics of the DE.

Somehow, I'm used to how KDE applications are full-featured, and while I appreciate how polish Gnome applications are, I still lean back to applications, and of course.

For those of you who use Distrobox, have you ever had a problem where you can't transfer files from the host to a GUI that is running in a Distrobox? I cannot upload to YouTube from Vivaldi, which is running in an Arch container. It says file not recognized.

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast I'm pretty sure you tried this, but wanted to know myself, does using a default image distrobox solves that for you? I.e. Are you doing this behaviour with Arch image?

I saved like 400 GB by compressing my old backup.. :/

mahmoudajawad,

@danct12 you could save more than that by not backing-up at all

Hey ,

Is anyone out there using FOSS for accounting?

I'm struggling with Quickbooks desktop (which you can only get as a subscription now, unless you pay four figures for an enterprise license).

comes highly recommended to me, but I'm loathe to go "" for accounting. Very loathe indeed.

?

Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback so far, updates and clarification following in a reply...

Welp back on Firefox. Vivaldi bugged out on me again after an update. As much as I love workspaces, it's not worth it. The browser can't break after every update.

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast Firefox multi-account containers addon is all you need.

Because we are tired of our current stability issues just like you, we are scheduling some operations during today's Sunday, 30 July 2023.
There will be scheduled downtimes of about 30 minutes each.

We try to limit the length to not interfere with your workflow too much.

We used the last outage to install some outstanding upgrades and fine-tune some database settings which have been identified in a recent contributor meeting.

Today, we will continue working on our storage … read on

mahmoudajawad,

@Codeberg Can we expect a technical write-up of this? This could help the community find ways to contribute in knowledge and effort to codeberg infrastructure as well.

OpenSUSE by default, apparently runs Python 2 still. Or at least that's the version it enters you into when you enter into a python environment.

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast on both Leap 15.5 and tumbleweed Python 2 is not installed, and Python 3 installed as python3. Installing Python 2 adds python to PATH. I understand if Leap didn't want to make the move, but I definitely would love to see tumbleweed map python to Python 3.

@opensuse

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast could the desktop environment be the reason? I'm on KDE Plasma, what's yours?

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer what is your take away on this? I can't but channel what another person said on Twitter "When oracle writes something like this about anyone they should know they failed, big."

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer I was there when Sun acquisition went through and it upset me just like it upset all of community knowing what is capable of doing. Now, imagine THAT bad company is finding move a bad one, and offering you keep previous model by offloading the dev to them, something like RH become rebuilders (or freeloaders, hobbyists, hackers..etc.)! Don't you see how positions were swapped over night?

Also, it is still possible some conversations are not meant to be public.

I have a button on my new Stream Deck that changes the wallpaper, updates the Pywal color scheme, and restarts qtile with a single press.

I've pressed it at least 10 times in the last hour. lol

mahmoudajawad,

@thelinuxcast I read that as "Steam Deck" and I thought you went all the way of DIY to create a new physical button on it and mapped it to this script for the lols.

More context.

We at Red Hat forward port (take a fix we made for an older version and adapt it to current upstream code and propose that patch to upstream) and we do backward ports (take a fix from upstream and adapt it to an older version that we use in our products). Both happen in the open, not in secret.

How many people out there really need source code changes to these backward ports? Not many.

Can everyone get these backward ports? Yes! They are all in our gitlab repos for Stream. 1/n

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer This is the best technical breakdown of the current situation. I'm saddened by the situation becoming a war land where Hatters are being attacked personally for their company's decision (though I understand and know many Hatters agree with the decision and acknowledged that already).

Frankly speaking,
Mike McGrath should resign, even the posts are his words. Second post has been badly worded, and terribly formatted, making the situation more of community challenge

How many rebuilds exist of Linux distributions other than Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

How many people make rebuilds available of the subscription-only Ubuntu packages with security fixes?

How many other distributions develop so completely in the open as Red Hat does with the gitlab repos?

Context matters, IMHO.

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer With all my due respect to all work in past, in time, or in future; Even RH should be criticised when it takes a wrong path. I think it is clear that at least good percentage of the community considers this is a wrong path move and it is being denounced for that. Also, is now having its own with , so I don't see why RH couldn't continue with that.

RH made billions even with CentOS existing, as community we can't understand why this had to be flexed.

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer While I didn't see anyone calling RH violated GPL as most of us understand RH has really fulfilled the license requirements, but sure, and calling community names "freeloaders, rebuilders, hobbyists, hackers" also hurt us. I think community and are equal in such terms.

mahmoudajawad,

@jwildeboer in 2012 I was among IRC users who passed news of as first FOSS company to pass 1bn USD revenue. I wasn't a Hatter. I didn't hold stocks. I celebrated because a company who has been very ethical in its endeavour deserves the best and deserves everything other unethical business gets. If what I'm trying to say isn't clear; I've always been RH fan. I have the iconic red hat. I speak from the stance that is I feel RH is pivoting from this great history.
