OK, who's playing Patreon bingo? I got my first smack on the wrist.

It is for an story which was posted on Patreon at the end of last year. Before their guidelines changed.

So yes, they are applying their new rules retroactively. Naughty past me! Should have been able to see the future!

And the reason they've removed it? They think it portrays 'real sex acts with real people.'

Story in next post, I'll let you lot judge.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@girlonthenet One thing to keep in mind is companies like Patreon seldom spend enough money on moderation teams. Teams are too small for the workload, not trained well enough to be consistent, and not paid enough for senior people to want to stay. Many teams rely too heavily on automation. One industry analyst found Facebook mods get fewer than ten seconds per item to review. At that pace, nuanced issues will often be missed and anything that even hints of a violation is treated like one.

mkb,

@eyesquash @flockofnazguls Guitar tone is so subjective. Especially in the distortion family, there will always be people who dislike a particular pedal. That’s fine. If you find your bliss, you won.

The company that's contracted to do security education has these little multiple choice tests, and it annoys me that they are confusing on purpose ... or they require you to listen to the wording of their videos carefully. eg:

Which URL is suspicious?

a. http : //www.gmail.com
b. https : //www.google.com/email

Um. The domain is valid for both. https is nice, but the later is a google 404... the former will re-load as https:

They wanted you to say the second one? Bad question.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Now I’m curious whether retention of security awareness material among an office population is better with text or video. Just this morning a mentee was asking me about research topics for tieir masters program so your timing is excellent!

In general, the field for awareness training is pretty bleak. There’s a lot more bad than good.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Ooof. Who is the vendor?

(Part of my job is getting people training which sucks less.)

Just a privacy reminder: if you're going to post a picture of your mail, make sure to blur or remove any barcodes on that mail. Every piece of USPS mail has a bar code with your full address on there. Zip Code + 4 extension (which is your neighborhood) + house # (which translates to your exact house).

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr The specificity of the +4 varies widely. Yes, sometimes it is an entire neighborhood. In other cases it is a single recipient. One can even apply to get a distinct +4 code.

The Dead Kennedys singles collection from 1979 to 1982.

Hardly any band has produced more socially relevant songs than the Dead Kennedys

What is your top single from the band?

For me it’s definitely “Nazi Punks Fuck Off”

mkb,

I am repeating my request for a term to describe the confluence of confirmation bias and schadenfreude.

That is, I irrationally dislike Foo, news comes out that Foo is bad in some way, then I feel smugly justified in my irrational dislike as though I knew all along.

(See Substack.)

Surely someone has already coined a term for this. @grammargirl, have you any thoughts?

If the reason The Times covers Biden with a scalpel and Trump with a feather duster were because Biden won’t do an interview, that would be nice. The truth is they also try this. Gore, Clinton, now Biden. And it’s because they sincerely think their job to make every election look like a coin flip.

@mcc @lolgop What’s frustrating is some of their reporters like Maggie Haberman have been doing amazing work but the NYT’s overall editorial framing is so damn timid and both-sidesy.

Someone on Masto put it really well: If one side says it’s raining and the other says it’s not. Your job as a journalist is not to repeat both statements, it’s to look out the window and see who is right.

Are there any fans in the house?

There’s a little stutter in the main riff of “Deuce.” After decades of listening to that album on the regular I still can’t tell whether the rhythm is intentional or they didn’t quite have the chops to play what they intended.
