Woohoo! @kellan has a new Link Blog https://laughingmeme.org/links/

Way more people should have one of these, they're great

> Like many people I’ve been dealing with the collapses of the various systems I relied on for information over the previous decades. [...] And particular with the collapse of the social spaces many of us grew up with, I feel called back to earlier forms of the Internet, like blogs, and in particular, starting a link blog.

59 years ago today, Griswold v. Connecticut guaranteed the right to birth control.

Justice Thomas says the Supreme Court should "reconsider" that ruling.

And this week, 38 GOP senators voted against the Right to Contraception Act.

Republicans are coming for birth control.

If anyone wants to help out by getting something off of our baby registry, I'm sure our soon-to-be daughter will appreciate it. My wife and I will. 🙂

It boils my blood to hear folks insinuate that is the source of their performance problems and they should switch to microservices in another language to fix the performance issues. Maybe spend a little bit of time figuring out where your bottlenecks are and fix those, first!

(This may or may not be a sub-toot.)

@ramsey: This pool cue is warped.

I totally meant for it to go in that pocket after banking off five rails (I mean API calls).

It’s gotta be the shoes.

99.7% of Venture Capital money goes to people that are not Black women.

0.3% of Venture Capital goes to Black women.

The 11th circuit court cited civil rights law when it said that it is racist to stop anyone from having access to VC based on their race, and that setting aside VC for people of a given race is racist.

So they ruled against a group of Black women looking to give their own money to Black founders. For violating the civil rights. Of white men that want that 0.3% too.🙂🙃

BREAKING: Senate Republicans just voted to block the Right to Contraception Act, which would enshrine the right to contraceptive access nationally.

When people say, "They'll never take that away," They're WRONG!!!

No Rights are Safe with Republicans in Office.

It's legitimately interesting to see how often volunteer moderation/server leadership is seen as a vulnerability or a problem in spaces where unpaid open-source dev work is positioned as normal or ideal.

My point here is that this is something you can’t control, because 1) scrapers will scrape it anyway and 2) 99% of spammers don’t get your email address from scraping.

It’s a waste of time trying to control this. It’s like trying to keep your hair color secret.

One time I found some in an app that was constructing a full blown SELECT statement in SQL, sending it to the server, and then blindly executed on that server.

It is still the most glorious, beautiful code I've ever seen.

Regarding the Microsoft AI spying thing:

Imagine it’s 2004 and we’ve just found out that Nokia (through a super secret network they’ve been building) intends to send all of the audio of all of your phone calls to the Nokia home office for analysis. Now imagine you’re boycotting Nokia for this policy, but still choose to call someone you don’t know has a Nokia phone, so even now your conversation is sent to the home office.

Of course that’s not okay. We would never have thought that was okay.

35 years ago today, June 4, 1989, Poles ousted the communist party in the first partly free elections since WW2. The election set off a chain of events that led to the opening of the Berlin wall. The USSR's European empire had collapsed by the end of the year.
Also on June 4, 1989, the Chinese army fired on Tianamen Square protesters, ending any hope of political change. The massacre helped inspire the Chinese communist party to create the total surveillance state they are completing today.

To those saying "If it can happen to trump, it can happen to anyone.", yes you are correct.

If trump can be held accountable for his crimes, that means everyone can be held accountable for their crimes.

This isn't a flaw or a mistake, it's literally how the law is supposed to work.

I, a total stranger, was thinking of befriending your kid, but before I did, I thought I'd ask you, are they a boring, selfish jerk?

It's fine if they are, I'm just really trying to find quality people to be friends with, so I thought I'd ask you, is your kid a dick?

Wait, don't get offended! How are people supposed to know whether to hang out with your kid if you can't answer a simple question?!

I'm looking for a book that follows no known literary or story telling structure, deals only in alien concepts, and contains purely novel ideas and situations. To which, I might add, I cannot and could never relate. And to be clear, it must contain absolutely no depictions of recognizable human emotions!

Microservices aren't a silver bullet. Rewriting your monolith into microservices because you think it's unwieldy or difficult to maintain will not solve your problems. Thanks for your attention.
