I just love the mish mash of and styles that the multi-period towns of provincial serve up. There’s joy to be found in the chaos everywhere you look! I’m all for freedom of expression and variety. Although I do draw the line at the crapola allowed by planners in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Been quietly working on a book idea hence my recent silence: current title ‘Sodden Earth and Soiled Water: an Environmental History of Virtuous Cycles and Vicious Half Circles’. It’s an elemental story that tells the story of the interaction of earth, water, & agriculture over the last five centuries. I mention it here so it becomes real & I actually write it! You’re the first to know of this. I shall post chapter synopses when they are written.

Trent-side residents raised a stink obvs (before the real stink arrived) and were vocal in their support. They won the day. Concerns about aren’t new. @losttourist I don’t want to be a corporation apologist, but they were facing some staggeringly difficult social and environmental challenges at the time. Manchester was growing exponentially and the infrastructure couldn’t cope. But your point stands. As they sought solutions they were quite happy for others to suffer.
