The federal government has a new online "calculation sheet" to figure out your carbon-tax rebate:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/cai-payment/canada-carbon-rebate-calculation-sheet-2023-alberta.html

It's quite literally a sheet, though.

Like, you can't type in it. It does no calculations.

I guess you're expected to print it out and pencil in all the values and use a calculator?

Calgarians' submissions to city council on the blanket-rezoning proposal have been published and more than a few folks seem to think this is the work of the World Economic Forum...

Example #1: "This city is now run by a mayor and councillors who are simply disgusting demons following WEF agenda"

Alberta's energy minister said on / #X that upgrading a garage to 200 amp service for electric vehicle charging costs $50,000 or more for most homes.

Does that sound right?

Has anyone done this? What did it cost?

Is it just me or are Google apps just absolutely nerfed on iPhones?

I recently switched from Android and the basic Google apps (Drive, Photos, even Gmail) on iPhone have less functionality and are so buggy.

Is this Google just not caring as much about its iOS products? Or is this Apple's doing somehow?

The RCMP in Richmond, B.C., put out this video showing a woman wearing earbuds who puts up her hoodie in the rain. She activates the lights at a marked crosswalk and begins to cross a road.

Meanwhile, a driver distracted by a phone call doesn't notice what's in front of him and continues at full speed, reaching the crosswalk just as she is in the middle of crossing.

The tag line: "Pedestrian safety is a two-way street." 🤔

I've been interested in technology all my life and am generally pretty open to new ideas, but if large numbers of people actually start walking around in public with $3,500 computerized ski goggles strapped to their faces, pinching at the air, it will demarcate the point at which I became old and out of touch, because I just cannot see the appeal in that.

Any other parents of young kids out there who like to hike / bike / ski / camp?

For us 2023 was the year of learning how to do it with a toddler while keeping him safe, comfortable, and happy.

And it went pretty well, overall. 🙂

In 2024, though, we'll have a new baby, as well...

Any tips, tricks or advice you've got on trip planning & execution with TWO young kids would be welcome!

A toddler carrying a single hiking pole walks down a dirt trail with a large mountain in the background.
A toddler learns up against a tree and looks back at the bridge he just crossed, which spans the blue-green waters of a rushing mountain river.
A cross-country skier towing a toddler in a Thule Chariot convertible stroller with snow-covered mountains partly obscured by clouds in the background.

CBC Marketplace caught repair technicians at Best Buy, Mobile Klinik & other shops snooping on personal devices:

"At the Markham location, a technician viewed intimate photos as extra large icons, which makes them easier to see without actually opening them, meaning they wouldn't turn up as recently accessed files.

The person also viewed the laptop's browser history before ultimately ... copying all of the photos on the laptop onto their own USB key." 😲

Canadians received their federal carbon tax rebates this month.

This is how the quarterly payment showed up in my bank account.

I'm always curious: How does the payment show up on your bank statement?

For years, Alberta published robust, consistent data on class sizes for each public, separate and charter school in the province.

But in 2019, the UCP government put an end to that.

Today, we have to rely on anecdotes to try and figure out what's going on:

It's an intentional — and legitimate — practice that boosts wholesale prices and profits.

OK as a data journalist who recently got a standing desk, I've noticed something in my habits:

I prefer to stand to write code.

I prefer to sit to write words.

Anyone else have preferences like this?

"Danielle Smith’s government lied about reason for Alberta renewables pause, documents show:

The government was preparing speaking notes before the date it says the process began"

Via @drewanderson :

This part in particular was interesting. The government says the briefing note was one of many. But no other briefing notes turned up in the Freedom-of-Information request:

Alberta is about to enter another election campaign and one thing that's actually not all that easy to find is...

... the candidates!

Seriously, it's actually kinda hard to find -- all in one place, online -- who's running where, with links to their websites/bios, etc.

I hope to make that a lot easier with a series of interactive tools that we will launch on Monday at cbc.ca/calgary

Here's a sneak preview...

A screenshot of an interactive map of electoral districts in Calgary and the candidates in one district, Calgary-Buffalo, highlighted.

Canadian Army: We are adding this new tagline and camo-inspired icon to our branding. This will complement the traditional logo, not replace it.

Canada Proud: Can you believe the Army is replacing its traditional logo???

#x

@WeAreCanProud : The Canadian military has announced that they will be replacing their logo with whatever this is as part of a rebranding effort.
