"Thomas S. Mullaney’s new book, The Chinese Computer: A Global History of the Information Age, published by the MIT Press, unearths the forgotten history of Chinese input in the 20th century. In this article, which was adapted from an excerpt of the book, he details the varied Chinese input systems of the 1960s and ’70s that renounced QWERTY altogether."

I learned to touch type on my father's typewriter by going through a how-to book.

"SINGAPORE – The ubiquitous clickety-clack of their keys was supposed to have gone the way of the dodo.

But typewriters have become fashionable again. People continue coming up with novel ways to reinforce the relevance of typewriters in the digital age – from a stress-relieving pastime to a useful tool for engaging children."

Mastodon can be weird sometimes. My old toot about somebody writing a new mouse driver for Win 3.1 running in a virtual environment is suddenly getting boosts. 🙂

Not the first time this (boosting an old toot) has happened. And this never happens on other social media sites.

Cool. Positronium 'atoms' are made up of an electron and a positron.

"Researchers are [...] actively seeking tricks to make sources of positronium atoms that live longer. In a paper published today in the journal Physical Review A, the AEgIS collaboration at CERN describes a new way of making long-lived positronium."

"KUALA KANGSAR: The first rubber tree planted in Malaysia, estimated to be 146 years old, is now said to be worth almost RM200,000.

Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK) secretary Saiful Azli Mohamed Nor said the rubber tree, or its scientific name Hevea brasiliensis, requires maximum care with maintenance and treatment costs of between RM3,000 and RM5,000 a year."

Why people think Singaporeans like to grumble a lot. 🙂

"SINGAPORE: Some say Singaporeans complain more than anyone else. And when it comes to municipal issues, OneService can put a number on it – 1.7 million.

That is how many complaints Singapore residents submit in one year to the government-run app that collects feedback on estate problems."

After reading the review of the Onyx BOOX Poke3 by @KelsonV I had a look at the BOOX range and ordered the BOOX Page. Here it is, on the right, next to my Kobo Clara HD.

So far, it has been good. I've installed the Android versions of Libby, Pocket and, yes, Firefox and they work fine. I've adjusted the E Ink refresh rates and button settings for the apps to work correctly.

Now on to more reading. 🙂

"After four generations of modular smartphones, Fairphone is turning its repairable design smarts to headphones. Meet the Fairbuds XL, a €249 (£219) pair of over-ear wireless noise-canceling headphones that are designed to be easy to repair when parts break or wear out over time. They’re available from today in European markets, but much like Fairphone’s existing smartphones, they won’t be sold in the US."

Nice article highlighting the work of local citizen scientists, helping researchers do science on Asian bees, which is sadly lacking.

"The number of citizen scientists working on different types of fauna in Singapore has grown from 400 in 2015 to over 11,000 in 2023, said NParks. It runs a programme called Community in Nature (CIN) Biodiversity Watch, where members of the public and students join large-scale biodiversity surveys."

Some arguments against wearing helmets sound similar to those now voiced against vaccinations.

"It was only in 1971 that the government passed a law that made helmets mandatory.

The run-up to this law saw fierce public debate over the need for such legislation. Opponents of the law marshalled a number of arguments for their cause, ranging from the inconvenience of carrying around a helmet to more abstract concerns about individual liberty."

Fantastic disguise (mimicry).

"The new beetle species (Austrospirachtha carrijoi)—found beneath the soil in Australia’s Northern Territory—emulates a termite by enlarging its abdomen, a phenomenon known as physogastry. Evolution has reshaped this body part into a highly realistic replica of a termite (as seen above), head and all, which rides on top of the rest of the beetle’s body."

Should be a fun read. Book by Kelly and @ZachWeinersmith

"Blending in history, law, and psychology alongside the hard sciences, the book gives a frank and honest summary of the field. It could have been the research notes for an Ursula K.
