A good idea on Mastodon is to regularly (once a month or so) go into your Preferences, Import & Export, Data export.

There you can save your follows, your lists, your blocks/mutes and your bookmarks.

A lot of instances (even big ones) have only one admin, or have financial problems, etc. You never know what can happen and it will be MUCH easier to move if you have all these CSV files with you.

You can never be too safe!

Admins are people too. When the announcement first happened, many admins got harassed, and threatened, if they federated with Threads (or even just thought about it). Many admins gave up and left.
