We just enabled GitHub Discussions for our mobile app repo, and added a new onboarding screen that will appear once you login to our beta app for the first time!

We can't wait for you to see how better and faster our new app is ⚡️

Here's the reality:

there's only one operating system that isn't looking to fuck you over in the long run.

We can say all we want about how it "should" be, but in the end Apple and Microsoft want to mine you for control and money. Whether that's via spying on you, or locking you into their ecosystem and their "blessed" apps.

Make time to learn Linux, if you value your freedom.

Less than a week ago, I predicted that @Firefox would implement Relative Colors (RCS) very soon.

I didn’t expect my prediction to come true that quickly: Firefox 128 (Nightly) shipped with RCS support! Pretty solid implementation too.

This means that Relative Colors will be Baseline 2024!

Testcase: https://dabblet.com/gist/58ec6a5493b95097a0c6a17b0cc9a840

Now if someone could update caniuse…

Here’s an #AltText question that I vacillate on: what about colors? Obviously some blind people were previously sighted and so including colors in alt text is helpful to them. What about people who were never sighted? What makes for good description for those people when we’re trying to convey the variation and definition that color brings? Should we just use regular color terms because people know how to navigate those terms, or is there some different emphasis that would be helpful?

I wonder why Google Fonts is not using fetchpriority on their own CSS?

It seems like a performance no-brainer, not doing harm when the browser doesn't support it.

to be real though, while it does grant power to be able to name something and thus interrogate/deconstruct it, i don't want to spend all our time splitting hairs over what word best describes the social and economic conditions we live in.

i just fucking hate how society is right now & how the economy is currently structured. it's a shitshow

We’ve always told devs that browsers prioritize what to implement based on dev demand.

There is one exception: #SVG.

SVG is used on >65% of websites. Yet, browsers have been refusing to work on SVG, ignoring pressure and pain points from web devs.

#StateOfHTML showed SVG as the top content pain point: https://2023.stateofhtml.com/en-US/features/content/#content_pain_points

Tons of work (SVG 2, fill & stroke, and more) has sat unimplemented for years. At this point, in standards circles, we know not to touch SVG with a barge pole.

Even if most web devs won’t directly write SVG markup, SVG is at the core of so many of our interactions on the Web. Logos, charts, icons, illustrations, it’s literally everywhere.

Ironically, browser efforts to kill it prove how crucial it is to web developers: at this point, it has been 15+ years that browsers have refused to improve SVG implementations, and SVG is used more widely than ever. What other Web technology could survive such neglect?

Yesterday I was waiting for the bus in LA after transferring from 2 trains, and I thought, "wow, it's really good to be in the city. There's so much random beauty and vibes and I can truly be part of humanity up close in all its forms." A couple of minutes passed. Another person came up to the stop, turned to look at me, and started yelling, "YOU CAN TAKE OFF THAT MASK, YOU KNOW! COVID IS OVER! THAT SHIT'S DONE! TAKE OFF THAT MASK!"

https://blog.kizu.dev/recent-css-bookmarks-016/

Another big batch of bookmarks: more than a month worth of them.

As usual, with that number of them (32!), I grouped them into eight sections: Colors and Themes, CSS Layouts, Typography, Future CSS, Selectors, Shapes and Effects, Everything Else and My Articles.

(The previous price had essentially been dictated by one of the books’ platforms, which is now being worked around by donating the difference.)

If you purchased the latest title and find the new price fairer, reach out so that I can offer you another book, free of charge!

What good is AI if you don't have a planet to use it on?

Microsoft released its 2024 Sustainability Report on Wednesday, and it's mostly bad news. Last year, Microsoft's emissions went up 29%, and it used 23% more water, primarily due to "new technologies, including generative AI."

The hardest thing about breakups, professional as well as romantic, are all the plans you made that will never happen. Or maybe they'll still happen, just not with you. Hard to shake that feeling of "if only we'd had more time, could things have been different?"

I will never get used to the NATO alphabet. As in, I panic every time I have to spell out something, and the person on the other line is expecting me to say, "Charlie, Alfa, Bravo..." I usually just spit out random words like "umbrella,' "banana," "Nancy," "igloo." 😩

You know, a handy thing for those of us (cough) that can fall into using social media as an out-vent for irritation would be an ability to have a "notes" banner to remind ourselves of an intent not to do that. Like, here...

With the popover API available in all browsers for a while now, we can easily build entirely accessible, even animated popovers for all use cases just with HTML and CSS. As an example I have created a codepen with a simple search button that opens a search field.
