Imagine really caring what gender someone is. The only reason you would really care is if you intend to treat one gender in a different way than the other.

"I don't know what to call them!"

Call them by their goddamn name.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@RickiTarr

I hadn't thought about it that way. The only reason to determine someone's gender is to determine that person's place in society (from the perspective of the person making the determination)

Human who works a job, caregives for children, parents, pets, or relatives, cooks, cleans, shops, is on committees, volunteers, helps with family's extracurriculars, tries to make it to family and friend social events, exercise, eat right, and maybe even do a hobby they are interested in: Doc, I don't know why I'm so tired, and stressed all the time.

Billionaires and Politicians: The problem is people are lazy, and just don't want to work.

Israel and the United States should listen, and demand upholding international human rights law as Article 55 of the Fourth Geneva Convention requires, and immediately provide all necessary aid to 2 million starving Palestinians. Period.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@QasimRashid

It's sad to think the Geneva convention came about because American politicians at the time thought a war of aggression shouldn't be tolerated, especially against civilians.

Now here we are in yet another ethnic-based genocide, just the same as always.

It really feels like America has more power to kill people than to save them.

The NAACP has had enough of DeSantis' anti-DEI policies and are encouraging Black athletes to boycott Florida schools.

"This is not simply about sports; it’s about acknowledging and advocating for the rights and supports of Black students within educational environments.”

We'll see if sports (and the millions of dollars of revenue they bring in) will be the Achilles heel of these studies e on universities in the name of combatting 'wokeness'.

This is interesting. I've long suspected city councilors and cops working together to narf on people they don't like, but putting manure in someone's mailbox is a level of pettiness I didn't expect.

In my town, the local anti-homeless councilor is always calling the state health department whenever he catches wind of a homeless outreach feeding event.

Wherever I find right-wing violence, I find journalists getting attacked. Their hatred of journalism stems from a hatred of facts; they prefer information come from authority than reporting.

If they had their way, journalism as a profession would be gone except for the propagandists who lie on their behalf. (which is not journalism anyway)

Who thinks that when the economy seriously goes upside down and their assets are worth less than their debts on the assets(which it will soon enough due to Energy cost of Energy and no good oil replacement), people are just going to watch as the bank takes their homes from them?

Hmmm? Would you just watch yourself get put on the street?

There's a reason it's called the "thin blue line." It's fucking thin.

We already have digital feudalism. That is, the owners of large digital spaces don't do any work themselves, but sit back and let others do the work for them. They don't make things; they steal or buy ideas from others. They don't innovate; they worsen existing services.

They are no better than traditional landlords, except that the rent you pay is most often in the form of subscription fees or subjection to advertisement.

Serfdom is already here.

I finished reading the Bezzle this morning! Ah, it's so good.

But it ended too soon! I wanted Marty to go to the blankets and kick the crap out of Junior in a court hearing, or something.

The whole thing was a bit sad. There really is no way the justice system can touch rich people. That's how it felt.

More relevant now than at release, I recall seeing 2010 in the theater as a boy. Ahead of it's time, the story holds many lessons for the issues facing humanity today. A great cast with an average script, worth a revisit.

They'll just continue going further and further for as long as they're allowed. The only answer is to stop them now. Opposition to is pure insanity, and out of touch with the views of the vast majority of Americans. And they know this, which is why they also oppose .

Another problem this article reveals: today's right-wing movement sees prison as a place to throw one's enemies into regardless of whether they committed a crime or not.

In other words, they want to turn prisons into concentration camps.

LeftistLawyer, to econ
@LeftistLawyer@kolektiva.social avatar

Stein’s 2nd Law:

“If infinite growth in a finite system cannot continue, it won’t.”

That we have a thing separate and apart from physics called “economics” is testament to greed prevailing over logic.

This becomes abundantly clear by simply asking the question: Why aren’t the negative externalities from production ever accounted for on a balance sheet? It’s intentional accounting myopia. It’s a direct affront to the physical laws of the universe.

But, poof … economists call it “profit,” when in fact it is a loss.

You read economists like Herman Daly, Steve Keen, and Philip Mirowski these truths just snap into place. Recently finished Mirowski’s “More Heat Than Light — Economics as Social Physics, Physics as Nature’s Economics.”

I highly recommend it.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/864669.More_Heat_than_Light

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer

Actually, I hadn't thought of it that way. It makes sense, though, when all the land theft and slavery happening around the time economics started getting going as a field of study.

They couldn't just say, "oh great, we're doing it all wrong."

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer

I've often been finding the heart of conservative / capitalist antipathy is the inability to admit when one might be wrong.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer

To answer your question about myopia, it's because capitalists have decided the best way to make money is through ownership of something- real estate, IP, company deeds, physical assets, etc.

It doesn't particularly matter if owning the thing is yearly negative for them (ie, Twitter). They'll just keep trying to own as much as they can in order to maximize their profits.

Hence, monopolization and oligopoly.

mike, to random
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

I hear a lot of voices complain about gov't regulation saying it stifles a "Free Market", when a lot of times regulation is trying to ensure a fair market with adequate competitive forces. I'm thinking some of those voices want freedom to rig markets as opposed to actual free markets.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@mike

These people don't actually understand how markets work.

In order to have a contract become enforceable between two parties, you need a third party arbitration mechanism. Then, in order for the arbitrator to not be bought off/corrupt, they need to be accountable before the public.

Any way to put it: reducing or eliminating government involvement in market activity just leads to higher prevalance of scam and fraud (ie, crypto)
