Most Americans think of viral disease as a state (you get sick, you are sick, you were sick, but now you're not sick) rather than as a physical process in which the body undergoes changes to the structure and functioning of cells and tissues, and these changes may be permanent.

Seeing disease not as a physical process but as a transformative state is related to the deep cultural conflation of disease with sin. This was especially true of HIV/AIDS, it being a sexually-transmissible disease.
