The reason why we would love to see more accounts talk about composting on the is simple.

You will be able to focus on your area and explain to local people what they can compost and where they can get their organic matter.

You can create a local community that will help your local area make a better place.

If we started this account it is for a main reason. Make people understand that by choosing to compost they can have a positive impact and do something about the .

So creating a multitude of local accounts that will allow people to organize and make their area a better place is a very powerful thing to do for the .

@compost Any reservations about using composted manure from a large dairy farm? I know little about the source, so I’m reluctant to use it. Any instances of PFAS contamination?

urbanmicrofarmer,
@urbanmicrofarmer@zirk.us avatar

@Bon_Jardin @compost I have a garden plot on the edge of town. The land owner says he will bring in the composted cow manure for his use and mine, if interested. Since I don’t know the source, I will decline. At my backyard / home garden I have laying hens. I know what they eat, and I’m glad to get their manure. Today I connected with the local microbrewery. I now have a source of spent brewing grains (free)!

Degrowth is the only hope

Imagine a world where you work three or four days a week. In your free time, you play sports, spend time with loved ones, garden, and engage with local politics. Overnight shipping, advertising, private jets, billionaires and SUVs no longer exist, but health care, education, and clean electricity are free and available to all.

We must massively reduce our energy and material consumption to have any hope of saving our environment.

In 2022, 423 patients were admitted to English hospitals with rickets, a disease caused by lack of sunlight and inadequate levels of vitamin D. The same year, 188 people were treated for scurvy, a condition caused by not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables, leading to a deficiency in vitamin C."

Bad policy keeps healthy food expensive.

"In the most recent farm bill, approximately $63bn was dedicated to subsidies...with 70% of subsidy payments going to just 10% of farms, most of which produce commodity crops…which are often used to make animal feed, processed foods and fuel.

...taxpayers are subsidizing processed food, but not the fruits and vegetables you buy in the grocery store...”

In a normal year, the lake would have a layer of solid ice at least a foot thick. This is not a normal year. There are areas of open water out there. The ice fishing festivals that usually attract thousands of people have been canceled due to poor ice conditions.

I learned from a beekeeper friend last night that they didn't get a honey harvest last fall because of the unusually high humidity all summer. The bees fanned & fanned & fanned, trying to evaporate the nectar to concentrate it into honey & they couldn't do it against all that moisture in the air.

If I compost, that is for 2 main reasons:

One, I care for this planet and I think that we need to be responsible for it. I can't watch the neglectful behavior of men who have become a real danger for it and do nothing. I do not want when the next generations ask me why has your generation destroyed our planet to give them a concert of bullshit excuses, they deserve better.

Two because I noticed every time I eat homegrown food it tastes so much better than any produce you can buy that is very expensive and does not taste good.

Tell me more about the reasons that have pushed you to compost.

Finland saved about $14K per person per year in crime, addiction, mental health and emergency services by housing their homeless.

In Canada/UK/US, we mostly rely on raising police budgets.

urbanmicrofarmer,
@urbanmicrofarmer@zirk.us avatar

@mynameistillian We started a community seed saving group a few years ago. We freely give out garden seeds and plants to anyone interested. At every seed sharing event we host there are a few people who ask, "How much do these seeds cost?" and we reply, "It's all free!" and they respond with a blank stare. They can't imagine. I like to think our little events give some people new ideas about how the world could work.

Last month I took cuttings from 17 old apple trees growing in an abandoned poor farm orchard.

My goal is to identify the varieties that were planted about 100 yrs ago. (See post from March 20 for more info.)

About 2 weeks ago, I grafted cuttings onto rootstock. Today I planted these little trees at a friend's farm.

Back-ups are always good, so I also grafted onto a vigorous young tree at my urban microfarm. These branches should start bearing fruit in 3 or 4 yrs.

Recently grafted apple trees inside a large plastic storage bin--an orchard in a box! A red grafting knife for scale (approx 4 inches long). Roots of the rootstocks are covered in soil. Small cuttings are attached to the tops of the rootstock. The graft unions are wrapped in plastic tape.
