If you have to do something you really don't want to do, how do you get yourself to do it?

@RickiTarr Find an audiobook I want to listen to.

If it can't be done while listening to an audiobook, I probably don't do it. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I just got a $9 residual from my little tiny role on "The Love Boat" 1000 years ago. Yes, I'm over 1000 years old.

I've decided to buy a car with it. Who wouldn't? It's an enormous amount, so why waste it?

It is bizarre to me that somehow Jesus Apocalypse Doomsday Preppers and Hippie Anarchist Homesteaders have somehow ended up in the same Anti-Vax group.

willaful,
@willaful@romancelandia.club avatar

@RickiTarr I grew up with the hippies and was pretty shocked to learn how much conservatism, cultism, and misogyny was there all along, and was the root of a lot of still current movements, like "Natural Parenting."

"Hippie Food" is a really interesting read, as is "Push Back" by Amy Tuteur

? I tried The Actress and the Rake by Carola Dunn, but it gave me the ick. ๐Ÿคข

Also reading a rather thematically interesting study on L.M. Montgomery and romance in her books and A Stroke of the Pen, rediscovered short stories by Terry Pratchett -- which are enjoyable, except I keep wondering if he'd want us to be reading them. :-(

? I read the sweetest YA graphic novel romance, Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy. An insecure hockey player being bullied by her team captain asks a theater kid who's often taunted for being gay for help with dealing. He's actually pan and totally falls for her passion for her sport. There are also parents and best friend problems. Thoughtful & engaging.

I don't love the aesthetic but the art is very effective at conveying emotion and bits of humor.

What is one of your best rainy day memories?

My Cousin Sarah and I got to stay at our Great Grandma's house together, and it was raining, and she told us we didn't have to be cooped up, we could go play in the rain. This was very exciting, because it's not something our parents would have gone for. So we twirled around and leapt in puddles and licked raindrops off rose petals. When we were done our Gran put us in a hot bath, and made us hot tea and treats. She brought out a big bag of costume jewelry and let us go through it, we tried everything on, and thought we were very fancy, and she let us keep our favorite ones.

willaful,
@willaful@romancelandia.club avatar

@RickiTarr My husband and I were staying in San Francisco and had just seen a musical we loved. We were in a great mood and decided to walk to our hotel.

It started to pour like nothing I had ever experienced before. Like the skies had opened. We had umbrellas that were completely useless and not an inch of us escaped being drenched.

It was somehow utterly awesome. We just surrendered to it and laughed and laughed.

Read an old Harlequin, Only You, in which the office girls all sneer because the hunky hero's secretary must be 50 and "what a waste!"

That puts her maybe 14 years older than him... a smaller age difference than between him and the 18 year old heroine. ๐Ÿคข

When you think of romance novels that are "romantic," what comes to mind? Books or scenes or feelings or anything. What does "romantic" mean to you?

willaful,
@willaful@romancelandia.club avatar

@FeliciaDavin Thinking back to my most reread scene ever, the first intimate scene in The Shadow and the Star, what caught me was the sense of discovery, seeing/joining a new world. Expressed through mundane details which suddenly have significance.

i like small, recurring details in general. A pair of glasses. A nickname. A phrase. (Can't figure out how to link to my review of Revealed. Thanks, Goodreads!) And unexpected revelatory moments, as in Seven Days in June.

After enjoying R.F. Kuang's Yellowface so much, I'm now reading Babel - which I got from the library. It's a 500+ page honker, and the library copy is a hardback so I can't exactly slip it in my pocket to carry around. It's definitely an at home read. Enjoying it so far. ? I finished You Say It First by Katie Cotugno, which I seem to have liked rather more than most romance readers. I thought the mix of romance/coming of age was well done and appropriate for YA, and I liked how much the opposite-attract couple grew from being together, even though it was a somewhat fraught relationship.

Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

A couch cover with grapes on it
A sexy nightgown
A painting of the house they live in
A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
Children's Lego sets
Toy trains
Underwear that didn't fit either of us
A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
A waterproof bed cover

I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

Decision: Early Morning Riser is NOT a romance. I loved it and then kind of hated it. It felt very much like one of my least favorite books by Anne Tyler; love the wry, funny, homey voice, hated what the characters went through. (Thematically, it's literally very similar to Saint Maybe, which is actually one of my favorites. Shrug. I am large.)
