Wonder no more!

Cripes! The Princess isn’t a small car, but that’s crazy. It’s a wonder we don’t all need an HGV or PSV licence to drive such monsters!

Got hit and run today! Well, hit and dawdle. Just parked up and the car next to me was leaving, thought he was a bit close, then the whole car wobbled and he KEPT GOING. Honked my horn, got out to shout at him and he just stared at me, the other people, said nothing and drove off super slowly. No apology, nothing.

Really quite cross about it because it's not worth putting through insurance.

I took these with my iPhone camera between 9:45pm and 10:05pm. The pink glow was only visible in long exposures, not visible to the naked eye. I walked to a darker location and still captured a pink glow, but it was fading.

I assumed the pink glow was lens flare until I saw similar photos posted to r/Austin on Reddit.

What if they gave an election and nobody showed up?

State of Texas -- as part of its "screw with cities" agenda -- allowed some areas to vote yesterday to dis-annex from their city.

Some areas in voted to do so. River Place voted to dis-annex with one single vote. Not "by one vote", but one single person showed up and voted in this election.

Some areas didn't have anybody show up at all -- zero votes registered.

I fear for our representative democracy.

I got to visit University Baptist Church today, which has served as a police-free sanctuary to students involved in Student Spring. They can rest, get simple medical care, supplies and snacks and are even cooked dinner each night. I'm not religious but it's moving to see a church upholding the tradition of being a place of refuge for victims of state violence.

An image of Texas troopers currently dragging off peaceful protestors from encampment. Troopers surrounded small circle of tents. Then protesters have encircled the troopers. Looking pretty grim there. Fearful of deaths coming in this assault. Follow @oconnell as he posts from there.

In order to get a Sheriff bus of arrestees out, the cops had to leave their positions to escort it away. And now students have retaken the encampment area and are continuing the actions.

Hey peeps ... there's election ratfuckery going on. The state is trying to undermine the local tax base by putting wingnuts in charge of property tax assessments. It's an off cycle election to try to discourage turnout ... so it's extremely important to show up.

The ballot is super easy and quick and there have been no lines. So please vote Austin. It would be better if you did.

The only thing that has caught my attention about these University protest is the following. This is america, these students protesting either their families are loaded, or the have accepted a debt that will haunt them for the rest of their lives, or they are extremely talented.
Education in America is NOT cheap, and it’s very unusual to see these confortable people “protesting”.

In Austin, apartment complexes with fire suppression sprinklers are not required to build a window in every bedroom. Natural light is key to human health.

https://www.kut.org/austin/2024-04-17/developers-have-built-thousands-of-windowless-bedrooms-in-austin-now-the-city-may-outlaw-them

shekinahcancook,

@lonestarplate

It is ridiculous to presume sprinkler systems are adequate, that water will not fail, and that no one will need to escape from a bedroom. Whoever voted to approve that ordinance should be held personally liable for the costs of remediation.

The Southwest Airlines checked baggage line was ridiculously long at the Austin airport today. It stretched outside to the rental car building and then zig-zagged around inside. Total time: about 2.5 hrs or so

bk1e,

Never heard of this site before but its description of the Southwest Airlines situation today at AUS aligns with my experience except the part about the line stretching to the freeway (which is probably hyperbole). https://viewfromthewing.com/post-eclipse-turmoil-southwest-airlines-melts-down-at-austin-airport/

There is a specific point here in Austin that will disconnect Android Auto/Carplay if you drive past it -- there are entire reddit threads about this phenomenon that go back years.

Supposedly people have reported to FCC but I've never heard of any resolution. I rarely drive in that area but did today and was reminded of the whole thing when my phone, indeed, disconnected.

Now I'm mad because this is one of those things that's going to haunt me forever.
