Why wait for Microsoft to catch up with what we've been doing for decades?

Get Plasma, a modern, fully functional, clean, privacy-respecting, non-intrusive operating system now, regardless from where you live and ditch Windows for good.

Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, Microsoft

These are the first 6 companies designated as ‘gatekeepers' under the Digital Markets Act.

They have 6 months to ensure their core platform services comply with our rules, including:

✔ Allowing users to unsubscribe and remove pre-installed services
✔ Allowing the download of alternative app stores

❌ Banning tracking outside of their services without consent
❌ Stopping ranking their products more favourably

We reached a new milestone in ensuring the openness of digital markets.

Last week, 7 companies notified us they qualify as 'Gatekeepers' under the Digital Market Act.

We will check their submission before designating them. They will have 6 months to comply with the and, among others, be unable to:

  • lock in users in their ecosystem;
  • decide which apps you need pre-installed or which app store to use;
  • treat their own products and services more favourably.

Today, we have opened five non-compliance investigations under the Digital Markets Act.

It concerns:
🔹Alphabet’s rules on steering in Google Play
🔹Alphabet’s self-preferencing in Google Search
🔹Apple’s rules on steering in the App Store
🔹Apple's choice screen for Safari
🔹Meta’s ‘pay or consent model’

https://oko.press/ue-wdraza-akt-o-rynkach-cyfrowych-straznikow-dostepu

> Zamiast debatować nad tym, czy dany usługodawca jest monopolistą w dosłownym sensie, unijni prawodawcy postanowili więc skupić się na faktycznej władzy, jaką ma on nad milionami jej użytkowniczek i użytkowników.

> Stąd użycie w unijnej regulacji terminu „strażnik dostępu".

NEW: WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.
— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards
— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable

Apple's abusive App Store policies led to the #EU Commission passing the #DMA to protect fair competition.

Just like Apple has invented fake #privacy, it's now inventing fake compliance.

Here's how Apple's absurd plan is a🖕to democratically passed law:

Today: #DMA #compliance workshop with #Meta lawyers at the @EU_Commission:

The #DigitalMarketsAct mandates Meta to "enable end users to freely choose to opt-in to [combining or cross-using personal data] by offering a less personalised but equivalent alternative".

When I pointed out to Meta that by offering users to either #consent to #SurveillanceAds or pay € 275 per year for #Instagram & #Facebook isn't "equivalent alternative" they said, Meta has to do that because of #GDPR 😤 Really??

I'm very excited to be presenting at FOSDEM in February! I've been working on messaging interoperability for about 2 years now with much of that focus being on developing an open standard for that exact purpose. We'll be exploring how works as an existing decentralized open standard for interoperable communications, and how other protocol development work interacts with Matrix.

Join me for a technical look at , , and the Matrix protocol: https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-3157-interoperability-matrix/

Apple is not your friend. The company that used the governments to become a monopoly, is now crying because the government told them to allow iPhone users to install applications from other sources.

We live in a world where we need government regulations to allow us to run whatever code we want on our computers.

Oh and stop calling it 'side loading'. It's just called 'installing software'. 😪

"Federations are (potentially) good! But federalism has a vulnerability: the autonomy of the federated states means that they can be played against each other by national or transnational entities, like corporations. This doesn't mean that it's impossible to regulate powerful entities within a federation – but it means that federal regulation needs to account for the risk of jurisdiction-shopping."

Okay, I just couldn’t let this rest in my head. I've done a few simple simulations, comparing:

  • relative change in net revenue (what you keep after fees)
  • for developers staying INSIDE the App Store
  • using Apple's In-App Purchases

under the new EU rule compared to the old App Store model.
