Part of a 3D brass or bronze model of Glasgow Cathedral and its surroundings in the Cathedral Precinct designed to allow blind people to understand the geography of the local area. While most of the model is covered in verdigris, the cathedral's spire remains shiny, showing how often it has been touched over the years.
I think I'm going to apply for a job at Apple. Specifically in the Maps division.
As soon as I get the job I am going to add a setting to disable Low Emission Zone warning. I might even change it to default to off given how people with iPhones tend to have newer cars which are not affected by Low Emission Zone regulations.
I’ll probably quit was soon as the change is deployed to production.
We spent a few minutes this Friday afternoon getting an old project running again. It's always nice to revisit old work, especially one as lovely as this one.
Oh look! I have a pre-Google map of Sunnyvale! Look at that giant undeveloped land at Wolfe and Homestead! Maybe someday someone will put a duck pond there. Can someone give me directions to Leonard Ave? It's not coming up on Apple Maps. #Sunnyvale#SiliconValley#mapping#gis#maps#history
11,279 coordinates obtained by WIRED show not only a flood of traffic to Epstein’s island property—nearly a decade after his conviction as a sex offender—but also point to as many as 166 locations throughout the US where Near Intelligence infers that visitors to Little St. James likely lived and worked. The cache also points to cities in Ukraine, the Cayman Islands, and Australia, among others. #jeffreyepstein #epstein #data #maps https://www.wired.com/story/jeffrey-epstein-island-visitors-data-broker-leak/
Most changes happened in the middle of the continental U.S., with the majority of improvements happening in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska.
Parts of the South, plus Washington and Puerto Rico, also received improvements, with generally mixed conditions elsewhere.

A remembrance project commemorating over 1,000 residents in the Munich area who were persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era. A Map by "Bayerischer Rundfunk" with the support of the City of Munich.
Just have a read. https://erinnerungsprojekt.muenchen.de #fascism#Munich#maps#nazis
"What Happens to Google Maps When Tectonic Plates Move?"
Great question (think huge earthquakes) and an incredibly interesting read (to me at least!)
As I made my way through this, I couldn't help but think about the precision of weapon systems aiming at a specific spot on the ground, based on potentially faulty map data. 😐
We love the Ordnance Survey's work for their amazing diligence in ever progressing toward greater accuracy... but we love them even more for works like this from 1935, "Britain In The Dark Ages" . A historical look back full interesting archaeological notations.
Is it just us, or does this feel like it might have been a big influence on later fantasy land mapmakers?
I ended up sketching up a fantasy map that has been waiting in my backlog for a while. It was nice to bring it more alive. (:
Once it is finished, I'll offer fantasy map illustrations starting 100€. Prices depend on level of detail, amount of continents, black and white or color, and furher stylistic choises.
