I would like to enjoy mastodon but sadly my feed is dismal….. if you research, post about, or love, and not limited too, #R or please say and I will follow you!

Attempt at networking post!

Hi! I would love to meet and talk to more people in etc etc

I have a Phd in and I work in

I attend my local American Statistical Assoc meetings sometimes, but they are rare.

I also helped start an R User Group once, (but haven't used R in more than 10 years), and ran a Big Data reading group in

Please boost 😀

Has anyone built Fediverse stats that show amount of people who post in certain language or top posters in the whole Fediverse? I'd be curious to see how many Finnish people there are among all instances.

Don’t wait to teach your children about statistics.

I left the house for a little while and came back to find that kiddo had decided to test if the dreidel was fair.

After a chat with some colleagues earlier, I pulled 7 days of our access logs for www.bbc.co.uk & www.bbc.com because they wanted a list of unique user agents. I've never looked at this before.
We had 9.7 million unique user agents in those 7 days. WTAF?
Granted, only 50k with >= 1k requests but still...

What if you had a data scientist in your pocket?

I've built a tool where my students (and you) can play with predictive algos¹ trained on data they/you collect. See:

https://mytoymodels.org

I'm looking for model ideas to get folks thinking (e.g., can I predict the quality of my sleep based on when I had my last coffee et al.) Suggestions are more than welcome! Heck, you can even submit them as pull requests.²

8 out of 10 of the top fedi projects (by user count) have a primary instance with significantly more users than average

Look at kbin.social for instance, it grew so fast because it was the first and only kbin for a while

Yesterday, Gil Strang gave his final lecture at MIT. It was monumental enough to be live streamed with guests coming in to talk about his influence. The fact that it was a normal class lecture is so appropriate. It is the end of an era in .

I only visited MIT once, for an ASA conference, but Strang has affected my life deeply. His teaching of linear algebra is the best I have ever seen, full stop.

I've been searching resources and materials to make my Quarto presentations and website more accessible to visually impaired students and users. But, I wanted to reach out the R community to ask if anyone has more materials, knowledge or just opinions on how to improve accessibility using Quarto. I've found some blogs by Quarto users but I haven't found too many options.

Consider this: The attached article states that there are 640,000 Twitter Blue subscribers on X.
There are over 10 million accounts on Mastodon, and 1.6 Million Daily Active Users.
So in one way, we're already bigger than the other place.
Specifically, in the way Musk actually wants his platform to be.

I realize this won't be a completely random sample. I need to hear from those of you living outside the region of New England, USA. I'm teaching a #stats class and we are doing Chi-Square between two populations. New Englanders vs non- New Englanders (and the rest of the world). Please reply with answers to these 3 questions:

  1. Do you like broccoli?
  2. Have you visited a country outside your own continent?
  3. Do you currently own more than 5 pairs of "jeans"?
