here's the thing: you might not like #threads, but it still could go a long way to wean people off of #twitter permanently in a way that #mastodon unfortunately doesn't / didn't (and, vicariously, pulling 'em into the greater #fediverse). #socialmedia#community
Lots of people are sharing #Threads data collection disclosure observing that Meta collects a lot of data. If you have an Instagram account — Meta’s primary means of onboarding users to Threads — then Facebook already has that data. 🤷♂️
lol holy shit look at all this personal data Facebook wants to hoover up when Threads, their ActivityPub fediverse thing, launches on July 6th. I'm not surprised honestly but it still sucks to see knowing how many people this will impact.
To be completely honest, I'm pretty excited about #Threads... All the friends I've tried to drag here from Twitter and who have resisted all along for a bunch of reasons (some valid) will be more likely to move to Threads (as most of them already have an #Instagram account).
Which means, even if Threads doesn't federate with the Fediverse, I'll finally be able to ditch Twitter. And if Threads federates, I won't even need to join in order to stay in touch with my friends. And best case scenario, once they finally understand what the Fediverse is all about, they may even join.
No, please, I don't want to hear about "Embrace, extend, and extinguish." First, stop being hypocrites, most of the people shouting it everywhere have learned of the expression two weeks ago, and... I don't have time for your nonsense.
And, if I may, you have a pretty inflated view of what the Fediverse is at the moment if you think Meta has any interest in extinguishing it. It wants to extinguish Twitter, not us. We're irrelevant in its grand scheme of things. (no need to @ me if you disagree, I've way past my quota of debating this already)
A comparison of #Mastodon and #Threads data collection / app privacy policies as seen in the iOS App Store. In short - no data is collected at all in Mastodon. Threads has at least 5 scrollable pages of data collected about you and shared with advertisers.
So because I enjoy exploring new forms of social media, I had to check out the new #Threads app page in the Apple AppStore. YOU CANNOT GET THE APP YET… the AppStore only says “Coming Soon” and the date of July 6.
But look at all the data they say they may collect about you! More than I have seen for any other app. At least they are honest about your lack of privacy! 😳
If you want to do your part
and take a stand against Meta’s new social media Threads coming up to connect with Mastodon possibly from July 6th :facebook::nes_fire::mastodon: :
Admins 🏠✨
If you are a Fediverse instance admin, you can:
Block all instances controlled by Meta before it joins us ⛔️
Be aware that blocking Threads might not alone protect your data from reaching Meta’s servers.
However, it is a great way to take a stand against surveillance capitalism, and the more people do it, the least impact Meta will have on the Fediverse :flan_sign::geodesic:
If everyone did this together,
they would have no power over us ✊🐘✨
I cannot see the launch of Instagram’s Threads as anything but a huge win for ActivityPub and the Fediverse. Millions of people now have an easy way to join and skip the headaches of server choice etc. This is GREAT, and furthermore, does not diminish what makes Mastodon great. More of my friends will be here soon. The insular “do not play nice” mentality of hardcore Fediverse advocates just does not appeal to me at all.
@drewharwell Can't say I'm excited or even interested about #Threads as a #Twitter alternative/replacement ... I don't think the solution to failures of one monolithic platform is to turn to another. Yes, there are benefits to having a single entity in control, but, as we've seen with the #Birdsite and even #reddit recently, there are far more pitfalls.
Of course my opinion, plus $5-7 USD will get you a cup of coffee at many coffee shops 😀; although $5-7 will do the same without my opinion too
Immediate thoughts: A) I know Bluesky development/rollout takes time, but "time's a-wasting, 'Flash'", B) despite Meta being Meta, I could see it take off: a Twitter-like social network that (from first glance) seems easy to use (vs Mastodon), is actually available (vs Bluesky), and is somewhat more moderated against trolls/racists (vs Twitter)? Plus while Zuckerberg isn't popular, he's not in Meta users' faces like Elon.
The upcoming performance review cycle for the #Meta team that failed to ship #Threads in time to capitalize on the RateLimitPocalypse will, um, not meet expectations.
It’s an amazing whiff: Meta has millions of servers, exabytes of storage, billions of users with current accounts and all of the backend services and people to support a Twitter replacement, but they just can’t get it shipped.
Reposting this again seeing as there's news :Meta: #Meta will make their new #Threads app live on July 6 which will also connect with the #Fediverse. This will overwhelm small #Fedi instances with huge amounts of traffic!
I recommend users import this blocklist of all of Meta's domains (mainly threads.net and threads.instagram.com) and admins copy and paste this iptables IP address block list to block all inbound-outbound traffic to and from Meta, both listed here: https://mastodon.moule.world/@MOULE/110586556696261405
Threads by Instagram will launch on July 6th (thanks for the heads up @dansup!) & I noticed Meta collects a lot of data. So much data!
Threads is rumored to adopt ActivityPub later on (in October maybe‽ We will see), but when it joins the Fediverse (if not on launch day), it’s data collection policies will make it easier to convince some (but not all) to migrate over to Misskey, Pixelfed, Mastodon & Pleroma.
Note: Uploading on Misskey as my Mastodon account @darnell is being fixed server side right now.
@the_Effekt@darnell@dansup#Meta does not need to subscribe or follow you to pull data from your instance. They can easily pull info via API’s, RSS feeds of simple scraping of your site.
I believe #Google is already doing this, & it would not surprise me if #Facebook is as well.
The question folks are asking is “Will #Threads future timeline launch with ads‽ Will #Fediverse followers of Thread accounts see those ads‽”
