We acquired this steel woodpecker 4 years ago (or maybe 5) at Ancrum. It occupies a half trunk alongside the Borders Abbey Way which runs through our ‘garden’ (wild wild woods). It has weathered very nicely on both sides and is frequently commented on - which is probably because while we have two pairs of woodies in the woods, they are easy to hear and difficult to see.
This is a red bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), I took the photo some time ago. I been debating whether to use it, or not. The woodpecker was on the edge of the roof of a small, red barn shaped, shed that I have in my back yard.
Omg. Never seen so many #birds on our porch! The #cardinal couple claimed the bird feeder for a while, the #woodpecker just sat there, and #chickadees were quickly stealing a seed on the other side of the feeder once in a while!
This is the only view I have with both the male and female fully in the same frame. Unfortunately, they didn't do me a solid by getting closer together 😅. In this photo, the female is at the top and the male below. If you look very closely at the bird on the bottom, you'll see a reddish tint to that thick stipe extending back from his beak.
Here is the first of a few pictures of the Great Spotted Woodpecker that landed about 10 meters from where I was sat. What a bird, has made my week. This year I set a goal of photographing all 3 of the UK's woodpecker species. I now have 2 with just the rare lesser spotted to find.
I came across a very enthusiastic woodpecker drumming in this dead tree early this morning.
It's a #woodpecker hotspot during the late winter but I've not heard this in October before.
Lots of #redwing have arrived overnight and there's an abundance of berries for them. #nature

Woodpeckers don’t sing songs, but they drum loudly against pieces of wood or metal to achieve the same effect. People sometimes think this drumming is part of the birds’ feeding habits, but it isn’t. In fact, feeding birds make surprisingly little noise even when they’re digging vigorously into wood.
Good morning everyone, happy Saturday! I'm enjoying the weekend so far and hope you are too. I was in the backyard and got a great picture of a pecker to share, a red bellied woodpecker that is. He was teasing me all morning, so I got my camera out.
Have a wonderful day! We're going to do our errands and maybe the MO Botanical Garden.
I love these guys, but...why in the heck do they obsess over our hummingbird feeder? I can understand the Bullock's and Hooded Orioles, but Acorn Woodpeckers?
Here is a gold-fronted woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) I saw at Roatan Honduras. It looks a lot like the red bellied woodpeckers I see in my backyard.
Don't bend; don't water it down; don't try to make it logical; don't edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.”
This woodpecker was around the backside of my property yesterday afternoon.
"Red-bellied Woodpeckers bring bright colors and entertaining action to bird feeders. If you live near any wooded patches, you may be able to attract them using feeders filled with suet (in winter), peanuts, and sometimes sunflower seeds" - allaboutbirds.org.
I'm moving away from #gitlab on my #homelab. It's not that I don't like it, I do. A lot. But it's way too much for my humble needs, so I moved all my local repos to #forgejo with #woodpecker for CI/CD.
I just finished the pipeline that builds and publishes my blog and it's working nicely.
