TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬
Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.
Very useful explainer posted by @dfisman. I’m am going to try and copy and paste it over here as it’s worth sharing and reading.
Going to be a bit bloody tedious as Bluesky doesn’t seem to allow copying of text. I have to “translate” it which opens it in a web page.. where I can copy the text😔
“By contrast using the test adjusted cases we find large, significant efficacy effects in all models. Efficacy is somewhere between 50 and 75% depending on the model we use
Those may sound high, but they’re actually consistent with what the CDC found at the individual (rather than community) level in their case control study of mask effectiveness“
“We estimate that masks approximately halved cases in Ontario in summer and fall 2020, from around 630,000 cases to around 340,000 cases. That means hospitalizations, deaths and costs prevented and we go into that in the paper
I’ll end it there. Yes, masks work. Our study is imperfect but we do eliminate some of the biases generated by variable testing, and when we do so we see that community masking is highly effective and saved lives during the pandemic”
Man will ja oft eben nicht ausschließen.
Und ganz wichtig: korrekt bleiben. Gibt es in einer Firma z.b. nur männliche Chefs wäre es schlicht falsch von beiden Geschlechtern zu sprechen. Außer es geht z.b. darum dies anzustreben.
#ClimateDiary We are having a party today - it’s my 50th birthday! I was hoping for a garden party (see invite - my favourite album & cover) but it’s another day of rain and storm. Never mind, indoors good too.
I share my 50th with Schumacher’s #SmallIsBeautiful and, in that spirit, kept it small and local. But it’s made me think of friends old and new in other parts of the world - including all of you here! Would love to have a #ClimateDiary party too one day 😊#Community#Friends#Reggae
@beardedtechguy and myself are looking for someone to help us grow #AllThingsTech in every way possible. This includes our blog, our instance, our wiki, our Discord and our community in general.
We're looking for someone that is super active here on Mastodon and will continue to do so going forward.
We're looking for someone that is willing to talk about the instance, advertise the instance and recruit for the instance if possible. (cont...)
@armerpunkt Not really sure what the full plans are right now. We just want to fully host things ourselves so that we have full control over everything and can expand things at a likely cheaper price if/when needed.
We want to be able to change things like max character length for posts, max options for polls and stuff like that.
So we're looking for someone that can and will help us maintain it as Kyle doesn't have all the time to do so.
@cliffwade@armerpunkt Sorry, yesterday was one hell of a day. But as Cliff mentioned, we just want to self host to have better control of the features. I’d like to have another person on hand that can help when I’m not available.
We have looked at hetzner, but we have our other properties on DO.
Can someone tell me why and how they view instances as a #community ? What makes them communities? I see people upset at #Bluesky empowering individuals/users why is that problematic? #Askfedi#fediverse
@BeAware I understand that but that doesn’t mean that have to be communities. I’m just weary of situations that resemble Big Social but because people can use a different instance and or platform (which is a huge difference) people act as if the behaviour and most of the dynamics aren’t similar
It’s been fed back to me (offline) that some of you here are finding my relentless negativity too much. I know - have been conscious of that too (i really have had a bit of a dip), and I am sorry.
So in an attempt to be more positive again: we had a lovely rainbow 🌈 here in #Eastbourne. I shared a picture on our street WhatsApp group and so many others shared theirs and we decided to see it as a sign of hope! #Community#Hope#MagicInTheCity
@pvonhellermannn
I hope you come out of this dip soon, it is a completely valid feeling to have, so I get it.
I think it’s a grief of a lost possible future (the one you imagined for yourself/the world) and comes with all the different stages of grieving. None of them linear.
Take care of yourself too.
@Hellybootwader 💚 thank you so much for this. 🙏🏼 i feel more and more that having real human connection is just about the only thing we have, the most important. Your reply here is exactly this. 💚
So community friends: what’s the difference between a community having a mid-life crisis (needing vision and clarity, but still worth keeping) and a community that needs hospice care (a beloved sendoff and closing rituals)? Are there better terms for this? How do you respectfully raise this question in the community itself?
@luis_in_brief I’m a big fan of letting a community die quickly so its members can remember each other fondly (and perhaps reconvene in some other incarnation). Might be wise to propose shutting things down—kindly but clearly—and if you’re met with massive protest you have your answer…
@Vivaldi
It is. It's true that I started train photography very late, but I've managed to collect quite a few pictures. You have also made many friends who share the same hobby. It's a pity that I can't have my domain referred to it. Maybe something for the future?
If you want people to engage with your content, you need to also engage with theirs.
It’s simple.
Social media is building a community. I feel like streamer/influencer culture has warped ‘Community’ to mean something it doesn’t - it’s made it selfish.
@PandaChronicle@britt I even heard few times this is the correct way to use social media and following not many accounts is mark of "success". And it was said by someone non-famous and invisible on social media. This sick "culture" tainted even regular people.
@britt Completely agree. I had deleted all my social media for years now and i've had mastodon for about a week and i feel like at least so far people here are more genuine i guess? I mainly joined so i could follow my fav Internet Man (but also very real as well irl) @ChrisWere !!
I'm just looking for communities to join but i'm a tad new to all this.
