Ok computer-touches of the fediverse, I’ve had enough of the Windows fucks and will be installing Debian <soon>. Maybe 20 years has been enough for a viable Linux on the desktop, who knows…

So what window manager are the cool kids using these days? Is Enlightenment still a thing? I want to not have fuck with things

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@j if I wanted to fuck with things I’d install Solaris x86 and have to compile and/or port everything, but at least it would be reliable

shermozle,
@shermozle@aus.social avatar

@jpm KDE Plasma is really solid. Its implementation of tiling is superb, should be the model for all implementations.

since there was no conflict or any content to the plot, and there wasn't any character development or reason to care about olsen, there really isn't a lot to resolve here, but we still have 9 minutes for them to continue to do nothing until nothing happens

By the way, do you have a personal website and does it have a home page? (I’m pretty sure it does… 😁)

I would love to know: what’s on your “home” and why?

Feel free to share a link, of course. 🤗 As always, I’m also asking on behalf of my newsletter subscribers.

ryanrandall,
@ryanrandall@hcommons.social avatar

@matthiasott My site's landing page has a relatively brief "About Me" description, plus links to "featured sections" and recent or featured blog posts: https://www.ryanpatrickrandall.com

I used to have a much, much longer "About Me" section, but I recently was inspired to massively trim it down by looking at @kissane & @dansinker 's sites.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@ryanrandall @matthiasott @dansinker Oh man, I have to make a real homepage, like at least a little bit, instead of just like "you get a blog post!"

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

@siracusa thank you for your post because while looking up your book (it helped me locate a very similar book I had as a kid but forgot the name/author) My long lost book was actually "Aliens In Space: An Illustrated Guide to the Inhabited Galaxy by Steven Caldwell" but now having found the book id been trying to think of for ** YEARS ** , I am going to check out Michaels book as well as it seems very similar .. and I loved the Steven Caldwell book, so thanks, this random post help me find it!

“At Microsoft, the share of senior employees as a portion of the company’s overall workforce declined more than 5 percentage points after the return-to-office mandate took effect, the researchers found. At Apple, the decline was 4 percentage points, while at SpaceX — the only company of the three to require workers to be fully in-person — the share of senior employees dropped 15 percentage points.”

The problem with federated alternatives to centralized services (and also one of the main problems with centralized services which lead people to look for an alternative) is Discovery.

Etsy and Twitch and YouTube provide an audience, supposedly. With the right pitch (and the right advertising dollars) you can get your own slice of that audience. (For as long as the algorithm graces you, and as long as you're willing to stomach the other things your viewers will be algorithmically suggested.)

whitneymcn,
@whitneymcn@mastodon.xyz avatar

@djsundog @ajroach42 The human time/effort is still the big issue, but maybe that's okay.

I tend to think of this area as the "human-scale" web, but maybe it's equally accurate to think about it as a return to the "hobbyist" web.

whitneymcn,
@whitneymcn@mastodon.xyz avatar

@djsundog @ajroach42 Pete Seeger once said "normally I’m against big things. I think the world is going to be saved by millions of small things."

I think about that a lot these days.

It still tickles me that the TERFS and Transphobes tried to claim Terry Pratchett as their own, and everyone who actually knew him, including his daughter, and co-author Neil Gaiman, was like WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, you couldn't be further from the truth.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@Amoshias I honestly think it's a kind of delusion, if you believe you're the good guy you put your own traits onto characters you like, even if the text or show really says the opposite

Taking a short Mastodon break. I'm tired of the culture of criticism here. Unlike Twitter, on Mastodon, it comes from those on the left who attack liberals for not meeting their purity tests. I've been attacked for wanting to help defeat Trump by those who don't like a Biden policy; for COVID-safe dining outside with heaters because that harms the environment; for traveling masked because some immunocompromised feel they can't. Stop attacking others; start being the change you want in the world.

You are trying to get out of a pit with your friends, the sides are slippery and there is a guy at the top who sometimes throws things at you and you know he's helping other people to make even more pits that are even deeper someplace else. There is a slim chance he could be replaced by another guy who will start filling all the pits in with a bulldozer. Do you keep the jerk or brave the dozer?

Hard choice. I guess?

He's a fucking president not a goddamned absolute monarch ruling by decree.

He can only do what is in his power, and he's been pushing it about to it's limits. The corrupted Supreme Court has already rolled back some the stuff he was trying to accomplish.

One absolute guarantee is a Trump win will ensure all the bullshit discriminatory legislation at the state level with be duplicated at the federal level.

So who's the fucking winner in that scenario?
