I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

I get the same feelings when I read the translations of the early Stoics, Epictitus, Seneca etc. You hear certain cultural biases that are no longer accepted and it can distract you from the valuable elements that remain relevant now.

For my birthday, I'd really like it if my beloved fedi could spread word far and wide of Kitsune Tails. It's a platformer with a heartwarming story featuring queer main characters and personal discoveries in classic SMB3 style. You can find trailer, screenshots, and wishlist links here: https://kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails

It's coming out this year and the team and I have been working hard on it for several years now. Most of the team is queer in some form so by boosting you'd not only be making me happy on my birthday, but supporting a bunch of queer creators making queer art as well

yuzu kitsune tails, a purple haired fox girl, picks up samurai armor in a tower that's rapidly filling with lava. she jumps away from the rising lava and sticks her spear in the wall, doing a dashing twirl to get on top of it. she walks off the spear and into a new scene, fighting a ghost fox with armor and spear. it stabs and she jumps over, but is caught by a follow up stab. the ghost fox over extends and its ghostly powers wane, giving yuzu a chance to bop on its head

This is an industrial designed exercise bike from Lithuania that can store 2KWh of electricity generated by your own exercise.

The electricity can then be used for loads of stuff - it has a bunch of DC outputs, like USB-C (up to 60W) and USB-A, and AC outputs (can output up to 2KW - enough for an oven!)

It can also be fed from a solar panel, or the mains.

It’s about 3K EUR, so not much more than a high end Peloton , but obvs serving a very different market…

@scherzog this is funny to hear considering that monomorphization, which plagues certain kinds of rust code, is already a problem for c++ that is extensively used in windows

Pro-Israel counter-protesters at UCLA previously took part in anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-vaccine events across Southern California.

Some of the pro-Israel counter protesters are also associated with local Proud Boy and Three Percenter militia chapters and fundamentalist Christian churches.

richard_merren,
@richard_merren@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz The article is pretty careful to note that these people are not pro-Israel but rather are opportunists who are there to push a separate agenda entirely. Repeatedly calling them "pro-Israel" in the post seems a bit gratuitous. When Gavin McInnes dressed up as a protester at Columbia he was doing the same thing--acting as an agent of chaos trying to find an opportunity for mayhem, not pro- or anti- Palestinian or Israeli.

While the rest of Europe is wondering how to sell more international rail tickets, SNCF is doing the opposite from 23 May 🙄

@bilginveperk alerted me

Pretty simple international trips like
Paris - Verviers 🇧🇪
Paris - Rastatt 🇩🇪
can no longer be bought!

Paris - Verviers - 24 May nothing
Paris - Rastatt 22 May gives some options
Paris - Rastatt 24 May suggests I go to Lauterbourg close to the border French side

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@mrtnsnp I’m more bothered as to what it means for the French. Imagine you’re not a digitally skilled person and go to a ticket office - and even there tell you “no, sorry!”

jon,

@nehalem501 Yes. But there’s SNCF’s own malevolence here too. It has a terrible corporate culture as far as I can tell.

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

One of the things that the Stack Overflow brouhaha demonstrates is that it doesn’t matter if a service was founded by people trusted by the community (Atwood and Spolsky) and was broadly community-led. If it’s a VC-funded startup, they will sell out their users at some point.

baldur,
@baldur@toot.cafe avatar

People keep forgetting that "by developers, for developers" was a big part of Stackoverflow's initial pitch. It was founded by people who most of the community implicitly trusted. They said all the right things. But as soon as they took VC-funding it was just a matter of time.

I think we know better now than to trust something like a VC-funded community site, but remember that SO was founded in 2008 at the tail-end of the Web 2.0 funding bubble

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur Also, if your VC pitch deck contains a section about you as a person being in control of a large and important community project, then is it a community project?

Rant:

I love retro games, especially SNES/NES/N64 and GB games.
Modern games, except for some titles, do not fascinate me at all anymore.
This lead to being able to run machines that are in the "older" realm. Not having a dedicated graphics card can be a blessing for sure. Energy costs drastically go down and one can run quiet systems.
Besides, playing retro games is not taxing at all to the system - any system will do fine.
I miss the great stories older games told... nostalgia hits again.

sourcerer,
@sourcerer@bsd.cafe avatar

@jhx IDK, maybe right now we can say about 'retro' game from 2004 now.

Games like Sacred also feels old now.

I remember few titles from Amiga, but idk which one i liked the most. I don't remember childhood well.

What games You like from "retro"?

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@sourcerer
We might even go as far as to call everything before 2005 as retro imho.

Some favorites of mine:

  • Link to the Past (SNES)
  • Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
  • Terranigma (SNES)
  • Zelda I & II (NES)
  • Pokemon Stadium (N64)
  • Ocarina of Time (N64)
  • Super Mario (SNES)
  • Wario Land (GB)

...and many more 😎

@sanfierro win32 is the platform name in general. winapi is the, well, API, the programming interface

most people glean what is meant from the context anyways
