I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?
@RickiTarr I'm in the same place as you. I think it's important to know where we came from to avoid repeating history, but others could (and will) take those as a manual and that's scary.
We need to be a better society before allowing those kinds of books, and then we need those books to learn what to avoid and the consequences of that way of thinking...
It's hard.
For my birthday, I'd really like it if my beloved fedi could spread word far and wide of Kitsune Tails. It's a platformer with a heartwarming story featuring queer main characters and personal discoveries in classic SMB3 style. You can find trailer, screenshots, and wishlist links here: https://kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails
It's coming out this year and the team and I have been working hard on it for several years now. Most of the team is queer in some form so by boosting you'd not only be making me happy on my birthday, but supporting a bunch of queer creators making queer art as well
@scherzog this is funny to hear considering that monomorphization, which plagues certain kinds of rust code, is already a problem for c++ that is extensively used in windows
Across the political Right, the narrative is that disability benefits (primarily Personal Independence Payments; PIPs) are too easy to get & are often paid to the 'undeserving'... however, in reality nearly half of applicants are rejected, rising to over two thirds for endometriosis (a gendered dimension I'll leave you to ponder), but with high rates of rejections over-turned on appeal (often with the same evidence).
This is an industrial designed exercise bike from Lithuania that can store 2KWh of electricity generated by your own exercise.
The electricity can then be used for loads of stuff - it has a bunch of DC outputs, like USB-C (up to 60W) and USB-A, and AC outputs (can output up to 2KW - enough for an oven!)
It can also be fed from a solar panel, or the mains.
It’s about 3K EUR, so not much more than a high end Peloton , but obvs serving a very different market…
@taylorlorenz The article is pretty careful to note that these people are not pro-Israel but rather are opportunists who are there to push a separate agenda entirely. Repeatedly calling them "pro-Israel" in the post seems a bit gratuitous. When Gavin McInnes dressed up as a protester at Columbia he was doing the same thing--acting as an agent of chaos trying to find an opportunity for mayhem, not pro- or anti- Palestinian or Israeli.
The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a #Stackoverflow substitute and that’s a problem?
Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the #fediverse .
That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.
Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?
I think some sort of flair like feature for marking posts as questions and marking accepted or best answers as such are missing. Flairs are desire anyway. Tags perhaps as well.
Then, if there are to be “super votes”, such as the OP accepting an answer or even a moderator highlighting an answer, that would be new too.
If the UI can communicate with a plug-in, I’d imagine that could all be plugin side.
what is the situation ATM for plugins affecting the UI in custom ways?
But yea, this seems like maybe a perfect test case for the plug-in system.
@mrtnsnp I’m more bothered as to what it means for the French. Imagine you’re not a digitally skilled person and go to a ticket office - and even there tell you “no, sorry!”
@stux I asked someone something similar a few days ago.
What point is too far and we really do push back into the flip phone?
Can we even do that anymore? Are the networks still viable?
Verizon a long time ago, forced me into a smart phone. They said it was a requirement because of tower coverage. This was a hundred years ago back into the iPhone 2 or 4 at least. Probably 10yrs or more?
I use my smart phone like crazy but with the amount of overreach that is constantly happening from every avenue - I certainly don't know how much longer I can justify it.
@stux I impulsively voted "no" thinking of LLMs, but... it depends? some of the offline, machine learning-based stuff that Apple does is quite impressive, like being able to search your photo gallery for text on pictures. I stick to a degoogled Android ROM with mostly FOSS apps, but things like that one do make me jealous just a little bit.
any ChatGPT-enabled assistant and the like can eff right off, though.
Aww. #RIP Roger Corman, the Oscar-winning “King of the Bs” who helped turn out such low-budget classics as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters” and gave many of Hollywood’s most famous actors and directors early breaks, has died. He was 98.
I love retro games, especially SNES/NES/N64 and GB games.
Modern games, except for some titles, do not fascinate me at all anymore.
This lead to being able to run machines that are in the "older" realm. Not having a dedicated graphics card can be a blessing for sure. Energy costs drastically go down and one can run quiet systems.
Besides, playing retro games is not taxing at all to the system - any system will do fine.
I miss the great stories older games told... nostalgia hits again.
