Today ( actually yesterday ) I learned that there is software that does what Mastodon does, but has more features.
It is called "CalKey" which is a fork of "MissKey". It is similar to Mastodon, but with more features.
Mastodon, MissKey, and CalKey all run on ActivityPub, the protocol that makes federation possible.
All 3 interoperate. For example, someone I talked to using Mastodon told me about CalKey.
Same content, just different ways of getting there. Like using a different car to drive on the same roads, getting the same content.
Supposedly ( I haven't tried it ), CalKey has an easier and more advanced migration tool. Something to think about when the next Mastodon server ceases to exist or you don't care for mastodon.social and other servers embracing Threads.
🔥 We are excited to let everyone know that our full website is now live!
We hope this will be an easy way for new users to get started with #Mastodon & join the wider #Fediverse & an organizing hub to build & spread a better, more open social web of ALL fediverse offerings.
Shortly we will be opening up all the code used in this website to a full Open Source license.
Not everything would apply, but we would hope this open source code could be used by anyone building out a similar onboarding portals for the Fedi.
For example: #Calkey, #Pixelfed, #Kbin or #Bookwyrm or #Goldfish or other sites may find parts of the code here useful and not have to rebuild EVERYTHING from scratch.
As we did before for this site, we are “building in public” & in stages.
So while our tool for sign-ups now points to mastodon.social for NOW we propose this round-robin plan. Give us feedback.
We think this model will work for any Mastodon/Fedi onboarding for apps and portals.
Principles of it could be adapted for places like #calkey, #kbin, #peertube, #joinfediverse & others...to balance the ease of sign-ups to decentralization.
This next week we are open sourcing the code, specifically offering all to #lemmy#kbin#peertube#calkey and join fediverse portals to use as it helps them - so they don't have to recode anything like this from scratch!
Well, I am not thrilled about having to #migrate. I get the issues, but the timing sucks, and I sure wish it was possible just to keep the status quo. Not that anyone has asked for my .02...but since when has that ever stopped me from commenting?? 🙄 Stand by for migration antics fairly soon.
Is this a #calkey function to insert the tags in each post after the text part and have all tags there without spaces? This somehow bugs me.
Is there zero width spaces used between the tags?
Been trying out #Calckey. Seeing how full-featured it is, it seems to me that a Calckey instance devoted to education would be a great use of the software! #Edutooters
Just read that #calckey.social defederated at least one major server (the biggest UK #Mastodon instance) preventing their users interacting and exchanging with each other. Not sure how this walled bubble approach fits in with the enthusiastic attempts to place calckey.social as some kind of mainstream alternative to #Mastodon, but the Calckey grandees may know... I am off for good, I like to make my own decisions on a server with mature and non-arbitrary admin policies. @fediversenews
Agree. I got caught by the wave of #Calkey enthusiasm and wanted to give them a chance. Lots to like (both the interface and the actual discussion). But those rash instance blocks prevent me from making it my home.
Mastodonapp.uk is not on any of the Oliphant lists, not even on the very broad Tier-3 that requires only 2 instances requesting a block.
I won't let my access to mainstream Mastodon depend on a single admin who is at odds with all other instances.
