  • reducing methane will quickly reduce emissions

I went a week without ultra-processed foods. Here’s what I learned.

As I report more, I’ve stopped thinking of processed foods as food at all – and I suspect corporations don’t care how their products affect consumers.

Let’s not let these smiles fool us. Our planet is a treasure, and it’s up to us to keep it clean and green.

has signed a bill scrubbing from FL law.

The pace of sea level rise is expected to speed up dramatically -took ~80 yrs for the 1st ft, 2nd: will take 30 yrs -next, 20 yrs. FL could see the next foot in merely a decade after that. Projection: 2 ft by 2060 -would be a shock to the system for Miami -aver. elevation is 3 ft. Local & ST: spending $Bs to keep streets dry. Pinning down exactly how much sea rise S FL could experience is a tough task. https://phys.org/news/2024-05-sea-faster-south-florida.html

#Water🚨:

The present dry spell has shriveled river systems in MX & CO & lowered water levels in the reservoirs that supply their cities. In June, their water systems might reach a “Day Zero” in which they fail altogether unless residents cut usage. Cape Town is a success story in municipal crisis mgt, but it'll be hard for MX City & Bogota of focusing primarily on changing public behavior, these cities will need to make big investments to improve INFRA-.

Mexico. May 2024.

Mexico is struggling amid record-high temperatures and a severe drought. Water is being trucked into service hospitals and essential services.

  • 85% of the country will experience high temps of 40 C (104 F) this week.
  • 1/3 of the country will reach 45C (113 F) or more.
  • 40% of dams are below 20% capacity.
  • Another 40% are between 20–50% capacity.
  • Power blackouts are occurring due to insufficient water to run hydroelectric power generators.
  • By May 9th, nine cities in Mexico had set temperature records (Ciudad clocked out at 47 C (117 F))

In protest of “intolerable” working conditions and lack of water in their barracks, the police themselves manned a protest blockade and blocked traffic.

Meanwhile, in other species, a large number of Howler Monkeys were found dead or dying from dehydration after literally falling out of the trees “like apples” in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco1.

  1. A local biologist attributed the deaths to a combination of factors including high temps, drought, forest fires and logging of their shade and food trees. ↩︎
