Hats off to the author, you don't see that kind of, uh, skillful rhetoric chicanery every day. Like "generative AI doesn't compete with artists because artists are not in the data market". 😬
Wikipedia :wikipedia: is a multilingual free online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteers, known as Wikipedians, through open collaboration and using a wiki-based editing system called MediaWiki -- at least that's what our Wikipedia article says (https://w.wiki/W).
I am very pleased to have a new print publication from Pepper&Carrot to show you today. It's the Norwegian Nynorsk version from the publisher Outland Forlag.
I have uploaded to #flickr some high resolution #photographs I have taken in #Svalbard some days ago. As always, they are free, licensed as CC BY-SA 2.0.
If you want to see the whole stream, following the above link, otherwise, follow this thread.
It also felt cool that I was probably one of the only customers asking to reproduce a drawing they were formally allowed to use thanks to #CreativeCommons ❤️
Last month the long-awaited switch to version 4.0 of the @creativecommons license went into effect for #Wikipedia and its sister projects! :cc: :ccby: :ccsa:
Learn how this will enable the reuse of more free content in Wikipedia, simplify attribution requirements and more in a post by the #Wikimedia Foundation legal team:
Yeah, you're really gonna see which companies are just gonna allow the AI to scrape all their stuff now. I'm a copyleft/creative commons kinda guy. But if you have art that you don't want stolen, the answer is simple.
MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE and put your art there (edit: and use that Glaze type of stuff on your art that wrecks AI, just to be sure)! Neocities is SO easy to set up! Or your own domain and hosting via porkbun, GoDaddy (non-WordPress) - anything at all other than proprietary/walled stuff!
I've declared all my translations of German folk tales to be under a #CreativeCommons Zero license, because I want to encourage people to share them and make them their own - just like the original folk tales were. And a number of people have done so and used these tales in audio and video formats, which you can find by clicking on the link below.
And one of my intermediate goals for my Patreon campaign is to commission art for these stories that is also released under a Creative Commons Zero license - so that others can use both tales and illustrations and images free of charge.
I've only reached 2/3rds of the funding goal, but I am looking forward to what people will come up with one day!
In the context of guarding against mixing proprietary data with open data and thereby producing an output that can't be licensed openly, how much proprietary data is too much?
If I were to (say) estimate historical hourly electricity demand by county using only open data, and then I compared my output with a commercial dataset to see whether they agree that seems like it would be fine. Right?
The Occitan version of Pepper&Carrot, seen on French television this lunchtime on the 1 o'clock news. Here is the 1min sample I extracted, subtitled and all:
If you have anyone in your circle wondering what this #mastodon thing is all about, feel free to share this #tilvids exclusive video that we created. @Gargron the video is licensed for #creativecommons as well, and hosted on decentralized #PeerTube to boot, so feel free to use it if it's helpful for anything!
Be sure to Like & Boost so others can discover this great platform! 💙 :mastodon:
Experimenting with streaming setups this week, mostly #Minecraft and a few #ClassicMac games like Lode Runner. Lag issues aren't really going away, although the bitrate tweaks I made a while back are helping. The other thing that's still an issue is finding a happy balance for stream audio. I've been using #Funkwhale to stream playlists of #CreativeCommons music in the background, but individual tracks sometimes drown out my voice. Compressor needed? 😕
OK, my #FairCamp site is live. As most of my existing music is CC BY-SA, full-quality downloads have mostly been inflicted on Archive.org already, but you can at least stream everything and there are links to #Archive and #BandCamp.
Some bad news for me this morning: Draft2Digital have just confirmed to me that their Creative Commons policy will remain the same following the merger with Smashwords: banned.
Side note: it would have been nice if Smashwords had told me this. I asked them back in Feb 2022 when the merger was announced, and their response was "we haven't discussed this yet". (No reply to later follow-up email.) It would also be nice if those with decision-making power in the publishing industry had learned the difference between Creative Commons and PLR.
This means that I am now looking for other options for the two (soon to be three) fantasy novels and one humorous nonfiction compilation that are currently being vended through Smashwords and their distribution network.
Fortunately, I can do the formatting myself. Know of any CC-friendly online vendors? Reliable ecommerce plugins? I'd particularly like to make sure the books are still accessible to libraries.
I've been printing custom #greetingcards this year for posting to family and friends. #openclipart has been a great resource. What are done other great #publicdomain resources you've used for pictures?
