Huge jellyfish invasion could disrupt Arctic ecosystems as waters warm.
New Scientist reports: "The Arctic could see a surge of jellyfish as climate change leads to warmer waters and less ice – a process known as 'jellification.'"
Picture of the day: Following up on yesterday's picture of the Jellyfish Nebula, I have a picture of a Lion's Mane Jellyfish. This species can get very large, but this one was small.
Picture of the day: This wild-looking supernova remnant is nicknamed the Jellyfish Nebula. Supernovas produce some of the strangest objects in the night sky.
Hundreds of thousands of By-the-wind-sailors (Velella velella; which are an unusual floating colonial athecate hydroid) just blanketing Asilomar this morning 🤯 They're making the waves thick with their doomed corpses. There was also a bonus Gulfweed Crab (Planes minutus) hanging around.
BOX JELLYFISH HAVE BEEN OBSERVED AT NANAKULI BEACH AND WAIKIKI BEACHES. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED. ALWAYS CHECK WITH A LIFEGUARD FOR THE LATEST OCEAN CONDITIONS. IN AN EMERGENCY CALL 911.
Jellyfish, jellyfish, swimming in the water
Why are you here hanging with your daughter?
I know that stinging tourists may be fun
And we all love hanging out under the sun
But the tour dollars will not flow
If Waikiki beach the people cannot go

For #zooplankton, there are few true rules about feeding. Herbivores will consume prey, and omnivores will consume anything they can handle - live or dead. #Jellyfish are often viewed as poor food, rarely consumed, so "jellyfication" of the oceans was thought a concern. While #metabarcoding has its issues, it makes possible identification of trace prey, and #Arctic amphipods are confirmed to eat gelatinous zooplankton esp if food is scarce. https://phys.org/news/2024-02-tiny-crustaceans-preying-jellyfish-harsh.amp
A strange,never-before-seen jellyfish with a distinctive stomach that looks like a red cross has been discovered inside a volcanic structure off the coast of Japan. The umbrella-shaped jellyfish has a diameter of around 4 inches (10 centimeters) and is transparent, except for a bright red cross, which is visible when the creature is viewed from above. The jellyfish is so rare it has only ever been spotted twice. https://www.livescience.com/animals/bizarre-jellyfish-with-bright-red-cross-for-a-stomach-discovered-in-volcanic-caldera-off-japan
For #PrinterSolstice prompt cool colours: My #linocut of of self-taught trail-blazing Irish #marineBiologist Maude Delap (1866 – 1953), 1st to successfully breed jellyfish in captivity & document their full lifecycle. She is surrounded by different stages in the blue #jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) based on her diagrams.
